Ten Things I Learned During Tesla’s Full Self Driving Free Trial

avatar
(Edited)

All Tesla owners received a free trial of the company’s Full Self Driving feature to try during the month of April. I posted a little about it when it was first downloaded but what do I think after using it for a month?

When this email landed in my inbox the other day it got me thinking about my impressions and the impact this would have on the world.

FSD.jpg

Here are the top ten things I learned during the free FSD trial:

  • It’s freaky. I mean super freaky. The first hurdle is trusting the car to drive itself. This happened quickly for me but Depends should be standard issue for the first couple of complex intersections of that first drive. Scary stuff. After this, an entirely different level of freakiness enters your mind space. You begin noticing the car doing all the little things a human driver has to do. It's like watching a ghost drive your car. Things like creeping up in an intersection to see around visual obstructions, moving over to drive around debris in the road, or stopping to let a pedestrian cross the street. These human-level decisions were particularly impressive to me. The freakiness subsided after my second drive.

  • It’s shockingly good. The latest version of FSD is extremely competent (most of the time). The version of the FSD software I used (V12.3.5) drove the car almost exactly like a human. I only had two instances during the month where I needed to take over the controls during the month-long trial. The first time was when the car mistook a parking lot entry way for a side street that was about a hundred feet further down the road. The second time the car just pulled itself over to the curb for no apparent reason. I just moved the steering wheel slightly on both occasions and it overrode the self driving feature. I didn’t experience any glitches that were even remotely dangerous.

T.jpg

  • Not many people know about it. I’m shocked by how few people know about Full Self Driving. Despite having millions of cars on the road, Tesla is still very much like a closed community. A majority of the public isn’t even aware of what the tech in the cars are capable of. Maybe it’s because they don’t advertise?
  • It’s not fully trained in all areas/cities so it doesn’t perform the same anywhere. FSD currently performs better in cities where there are more Teslas in use. The AI neural net that Tesla has developed partially relies on data from each individual car to “map” a city. More glitches will occur in areas where FSD hasn’t been used as much.
  • FSD has a lead foot. Even though FSD is already 5x safer than a human driver, it takes off pretty aggressively (as you can see from my car insurance’s Drive & Save app). This makes it a little tougher to get comfortable with at first. My acceleration score was in the 90% range before the free trial, now it’s sitting at 56%.

Ins.jpg

  • FUD against Tesla is extremely effective. I’ve seen multiple outright lies about Tesla products, some in once respected mainstream publications, but the public is none-the-wiser. Special interest groups (oil companies, automakers) are relentlessly spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) about Teslas and EVs in general in the media. Such a large percentage of the public are taking the bait and have turned against the technology. Now that I’ve experienced FSD in person I know why these special interests are spending so much time and effort on their smear campaigns. This tech is preparing to completely disrupt and upend the entire transportation industry. Many have no idea the extent of what is coming in the next 2-3 years.
  • Full Self Driving isn’t for me…yet. I wouldn’t pay the $8k fee or subscribe for $99/month on a regular basis for Full Self Driving. First off, in its current iteration you have to still have your eyes on the road and touch the steering wheel every minute or so or it will disengage. For that price I would want to be able to just relax and have the car drive me without any worries. Even without FSD Teslas have a lot of crash avoidance tech built in so I’m comfortable with this right now. Also, I still enjoy driving, especially the Tesla, but it’s great to know that FSD will be there when I need it.
  • The FSD free trial wasn’t just to market the product. The free trial of FSD was mainly to gather as much driver data as possible to make the AI-neural net that drives FSD more competent. As of the end of April 2024, Tesla has racked up 1.3B miles worth of data collected from driving. FSD will be ready for Level 4-5 autonomous driving within the next twelve months or so but then will face the arduous challenges of regulatory approval.
  • This tech will be licensed to other automakers. Tesla is already in talks with a couple major automakers about making FSD available on their cars, more will follow suit.

Robo.jpg

  • Autonomous driving will help a lot of people and make the world a safer and more relaxed place. The FSD free trial was a glimpse of a very near future when most cars will be driving themselves. The robotaxi, rendered above, will be unveiled this August and will be released next year. It will be the first vehicle without driver controls. Currently FSD is 5x safer than a human driver but the goal is to get beyond 20x more safe. It will be a Godsend for those with disabilities and the elderly. There will be financial incentives to coax drivers to use autonomous driving first, insurance rates will be discounted and possibly even health insurance premiums (since being in an auto accident is so statistically high). In a decade seeing a human drive their own car will be a rare thing and that time in the car will be viewed as “productive time”, or more likely just more time for people to stare at their phones.

I am not sure whether I would trust being in a vehicle which is driven by AI 🙄

The trust was earned surprisingly fast for me. Those first few intersections though....Ugh!

Oh man! Depends and couple of stiff drinks would be my go to I think lol. I haven't had to opportunity to see it in action, but seems a little futuristic for me. Now if I could transport like they did in Star Trek I would be more inclined hahaaa

That first drive is scary, there's no getting around it. It took me a solid week to become fully comfortable. That first week I was more on edge than I would have been if I was driving but after you learn to trust the tech it's an incredible experience. There was something new that impressed me about it on almost every drive.

Having read your first opinion on this vehicle it is interesting to read some more feedback, never scoff at something you have never tried.

Tesla is far out of our price range, would never be an option it is good to follow the science behind the vehicle.

Future possibilities are a case of never say never!

I was a believer by the end of the month. Rumor has it that this robotaxi will also be released as a $25k vehicle with driver controls. After tax incentives it'll be one of the cheapest vehicles on the market, if Tesla can bring it to market at the estimated price.

Will watch progress as it rolls out in countries where it may be more sustainable.

That's awesome. Thanks for the great break down. I totally believe the part about less road rage. I like that idea. I was thinking as I read this that most Tesla's have pretty tinted windows. There is a good chance every Tesla I pass on the road is using this tech and I don't even realize it.

Thanks! Yes, the road rage reduction would be a huge plus. I always wonder if the cars are driving themselves too. One give away is if the car stays in dead center of the lane at all times. A human driver will occasionally drift to one side or another but FSD doesn’t do that (in my experience).

Ah, interesting. I will have to keep an eye out for that!

It is a shame that the autonomous driving test has concluded; Great that you have been encouraged to use it and draw your own conclusions, the points you mention are very interesting, especially the final point where you share that you would not update the system for that cost, having some things to improve as you mention
I watched the video of your test drive and it was amazing.
Thank you very much dear friend @ericvancewalton for sharing this review
have a great day

Thank you my friend! I was grateful for the experience but will probably wait to buy it for another decade or so (unless it gets cheaper). I hope you’re having a great week!

Auto driving cars are amazing, Tesla has done it all so it will be very safe and similar to human driving.

I think one of the huge problems with FSD is that the driver doesn't truly ever know what the car is thinking... will it blow through a stop sign or stop at the last second? It'd be great to have something on the screen that tells the driver/passenger what its intentions are.

Also, you've mentioned earlier that there is a rumour about a $25K vehicle coming out... I believe that is at least 4-5 years away based on industry insider information and reports from suppliers.

You get that forewarning already with FSD because it forces you to enter your destination then actively navigates you to it with onscreen visualizations. I can totally see your point about delays in rollout of robotaxi. Teslas estimates are historically optimistic and usually come years later than the original goal. I hope this time is different or other manufacturers will have time to catch up.

Sorry, I should have been more clear... I'm talking about the much smaller decisions that aren't currently represented on the on-screen visualizations... how it's intending to tackle the next stop light, where will it merge, etc etc. I've seen so many videos of people using FSD that have had to disengage because they weren't sure if FSD was going to stop at a stop sign... and I've seen a ton of videos of it just blowing through a stop sign with no pause... one disengagement was because FSD started to merge into oncoming traffic, so it's hard for drivers to know if they should disengage or not.

I think a little screen or some kind of information somewhere that shows its next intended move would be really useful.

Yeah, the typical development cycle of a vehicle is usually 4-5 years, with some models coming 10 years after they've been designed. For a new vehicle to be in production in 2024 or 2025, suppliers would have been notified and orders made, and apparently that hasn't happened yet... so I'd guess years away is more likely... but happy to be wrong.

Oh, I see! It would be interesting to catch a glimpse "under the hood" of FSD's decision-making. A voice function would also be nice, where it would tell you what it was about to do. That would go a long way to ease anxieties at first. It would have been helpful to me as I was heading into those first few intersections.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly the next gen Tesla vehicles will be rolled out. The timeline you mention certainly does come close to the Cybertruck development/production cycle.

Yeah, a voice function would be awesome!
I was just thinking a little message bar somewhere that was all "Stopping in 30ft", "Merging in 10 seconds", "Pausing at roundabout to check for oncoming vehicles"... but I guess in a way that isn't distracting for the driver who needs to keep their eyes on the road (at least until Level 4 Autonomy (full self driving) is available).

I'm glad you had this experience. I've actually never even been in a Tesla myself.

However things are beginning to advance in stuffs like this but putting too much trust in the ai driving is a 50-50 chance for me lol.

It's going to have to earn peoples' trust, for sure. It's pretty good though and will only get better.

Good points highlighted by Up, if such changes are made, the car will be more popular

I wouldn’t pay the $8k fee or subscribe for $99/month on a regular basis for Full Self Driving.

No one should pay nothing for that. I mean for any function of the car. You bought the car, and every function should come with it. Paying additional money for any function is like buying your house twice, or paying rent for your own house, depending on the nature/frequency of the payment.

FSD really is a value-add over the car itself. It would be like hiring a driver your car, really. I just think what they're currently charging for it and the fact that you can't transfer it to future vehicles is a deal-breaker for me. IMO, $5k plus lifetime transfers would be about the proper price point. How's it going with the new hawk?

How's it going with the new hawk?

Good. She is slowly getting used both to me and to other people, and to other animals too, and to the environment in general. I will write a blog post about it in the next few days.

Initially I assumed the various news about the dangers of the FSD were spread to reduce the popularity of these cool cars and you just clarified me.

Thanks for the great overview of your impressions! I am one of the persons not that much aware of FSD. Iknow Tesla is working on it but didn't know it's already that good. Like you stated, it seems to be a glimpse of the near future rather than the far-away future!

It's just recently become this good. It's been an option on the cars for quite a few years but started becoming competent after Tesla's FSD team switched from using lines of code and sensors to cameras and an AI neural net.

Oh okay, I am not following it that closely to be honest but I am sure it's a good thing fsd is getting better and better. Like you say, it's more safe than humans!

Sorry I'm asking like an idiot! Are you talking of real cars driving themselves for real or you are talking about a kind of game? 🙈

This is very much real. Even I couldn't believe it when I first experienced it. I have a feeling the US government will make it next to impossible for Tesla to get regulatory approval for full autonomous driving. We'll likely see Tesla do it first in China.

Very interesting what you relate to about your experience with autonomous vehicles. Although... I think as a technology lover I should be excited, but as a driver, I wouldn't change the experience of being in control of a self-motor vehicle.

By the way, how did it go with the Rabbit device? Did you get it yet? I would like to know your experience.

Greetings, my friend.

I think I would miss driving too but the beauty is you can turn it off whenever you like.

I still haven't gotten my Rabbit R1. My order is in batch 2 and they're shipping by the end of June, I guess. Early reviews are pretty bad but, so far, the dev team is trying to address user issues with OTA software updates. I'm tempted to cancel my order but will probably just go through with it with the hope that the team continues to improve the device and the product doesn't die.

Thanks! I changed my mind last night and canceled my order. I've just read way too many bad reviews. I'll probably still get one at some point down the road but don't feel like going through the pains of being an early adopter in this instance. To their credit, the team issued the refund right away. The team seems awesome.

It is a fact that the owner of this company is a very intelligent person so he is the richest person in the world and such features are being introduced which will make people feel very good and people must buy such cars. Some of the points you mentioned are also true, if they are eliminated in this way, then these vehicles are going to be very popular in the near future.

It took me a while to get comfortable with it. I guess it's improved so much this last month that they're going to remove the "steering wheel nag". The car would force you to apply pressure to the steering wheel every few minutes to prove you were alert and paying attention. Considering all of the people I see looking at their phones while driving I think I'd feel safer if everyone was using it.

That rendering is pretty cool. It would make all the sense in the world to design it like that. I've also seen renderings where it was a three-wheel vehicle with just two seats and a cargo hatch. I think something closer to a London cab would make the most sense. That design is tried and true.
