Microsoft Is Winning The ‘Cloud War’ Against Amazon: Report (Forbes)
- While Amazon still leads cloud services in terms of overall revenue and spending, Microsoft is the most poplar supplier and is steadily gaining market share against major competitors.
- Microsoft’s lead has been increasing since 2017.
Analysis and Comments
- Both Amazon and Microsoft are looking to continue their cloud expansion in 2020 and will likely need to start fending off Google and its cloud initiative GCP as well – last year, Google announced the takeover of Looker Data Sciences, a cloud company (the deal is currently under review by the CMA), as well as enterprise software firm CloudSimple.
- Overall, analysts think the fact that Microsoft managed to win the US$10bn Pentagon contract termed Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud (JEDI…yes, that’s right) last year will give it an edge.
- This is mainly because both companies see governments as a way to further expand their cloud businesses and having a Pentagon contract may end up useful in winning further government contracts.
