I think Linux has many years before it can be taken serious as a desktop replacement. It has come a long way and is getting better, but it just isn't there for anything but hardcore dev types or basic functionality like email/browser only.
The best move Microsoft could make is to build a strong UI for Linux to replace Windows, with native support for Windows apps like it did for Linux would be insane.
