Will Mobiles Take Over All?

Mobile computing has many formfactors and architectures. Laptops, netbooks, tablet and many other devices have seen consumer adoption throughout time and trends have been gradually shifting along with that. I need computing for various reasons, whether for professional design purposes or simple media viewing, investing in a device that fits our own requirements is important. Moving along with the times, it seems that I have become ever more reliant on my phone. Taking photos, communication across multiple platforms and even streaming my favourite shows on my device is not out of the norm. Downloading a short 3GP clip via WAP is still fresh in my mind but I couldn’t have imagined to be streaming my favourite shows on the go and even being able to cast to a bigger screen at the flick of my wrist.

With manufacturers making use of meaningful data, it would appear that consolidation of technology is constantly happening. New devices, specifications and capabilities are being moulded under the needs of society and it really makes me wonder whether one device is all we will need in the future. Better network capabilities and even more cloud computing services being introduced are making the entry requirements to performance even lower, we might not need hefty devices in the future to carry out intensive tasks. The travel and commuting lifestyles are steadily increasing demand, dictating lifestyles. It’s only natural that users begin to seek mobile solutions that they can access at any time. Can your take a laptop everywhere you go? That’s what they were made for. Perhaps there will be a time however where our lifestyles will shift to access portals on the go. The other obvious device I see taking over is the mobile phone.

Mobile phones are continuing to evolve and perhaps with the next jump in solid state battery, ram packing and performance chips, users might be thinking twice as to whether they need a laptop or desktop. I love my devices and have a number of computers to suit my needs. Having seen Samsung DeX and the evolution of docking stations for phones, perhaps this is the next stage of mobile computing. One brain that serves all for a unified experience, bolstered by cloud computing technology that will give access to programs we would traditionally need. I’ve seen mobile app development also take strides in features and it makes me curious to see how society will evolve. Will the laptop evolve or be replaced? It’s hard to say but I do believe that users will eventually seek consolidation into a minimalistic approach to computing, the mobile phone is the perfect companion and will continue to anchor its utility in our daily lives.
