Unreal Engine 5 - The Next Gen Demo

avatar

Coming off Microsoft’s recent disappointing look at the next generation of ‘gameplay’, a pleasant reveal from Epic Games has rekindled my excitement for a new leap in graphics and gameplay. Unreal Engine 5 was unveiled as a tech demo running on the Sony PlayStation 5. I’ve always been impressed by each iteration of the Unreal Engine. Tech demos are not necessarily indicative of how a new era of gaming will look like in the coming future but it is a showcase of the benefits it can bring to industry as a whole. Consumers and developers are all excited about the forthcoming Unreal Engine as it aims to bring photorealism to videogames while making production efficient through a collection of tools and libraries.

Artists will be over the digital moon with virtualised geometry giving access to high quality assets that would otherwise be used in some of the biggest blockbuster movies. I love the emphasis on this efficient process as it’s sure to save tonnes of resource while giving greater freedom to creativity. Coupling this with the new Lumen system, a “fully dynamic global illumination solution”, the tech demo was something truly worthy of being labelled as the next generation of gaming. The environment was beautifully detailed and the movie standard assets were incredibly detailed. Sheer density of triangles and native resolution of textures created one of the most realistic scenes I have seen demoed in real time on a console to date.

It’s clear that over the years, Epic have developed an extensive library and toolset that has served as the foundation of this new engine. Graphics including animation, sounds and physics have created something new and exciting. The closing open world scene was especially breath taking as we were whizzed through the air. This tech demo felt like a blockbuster in the works and I am very excited about the arrival of new games running on Unreal Engine 5. It’s not due for release until next year so I will be keeping my eye peeled until then. Perhaps the future will hold a slew of remakes. I would love to see some of my favourite games running in this engine. I hope that production of games are made considerably easier, the end products through the next generation of videogame titles may be a leap I have been waiting for a long time.
