Technology, Crisis Management and Privacy

Technology makes a huge difference in our lives and it’s incredibly exciting to see how new inventions will continue to reshape the way we go about our daily lives. With the world having made great strides in tech and data science, natural events have brought about new ways of implementation during moments of crisis. Technology in crisis can mean different things to people. Consumers complain about prices skyrocketing due to supply issues, others think about how the technology we have today can make a difference in the days to come. The coronavirus is a widespread issue that has impacted countries all over. I wanted to take a deeper look at how technology was being used to manage the epidemic in China.

While doctors and nurses are on the frontlines, treating patients and eventually running into fatigue and illness themselves, there is another side that is a little less human. As we have seen in quirky restaurants recently, robot interaction with humans is on the rise and can be somewhat efficient. A single server can load up the bot and off it goes to do its job. During crisis, efficiency is not the main focus. In an environment of high risk, shouldn’t we be using technology to protect our valuable staff and providing efficient treatment? Robots, data and automation may hold the key.

Reduction of human interaction in public spaces and even monitoring is starting to be carried out by bots and drones. China has implemented a number of new automated systems that track the population, and this of course feels like the Big Brother is out in the open, watching you and I. With an epidemic struck country however, perhaps the population feel little concern or priority to protest against increased surveillance. People want results and want to live safely, sometimes compromise is needed to achieve this.

Personally, it feels suffocating but I have to consider the benefits. Drone squads in the sky and constant tracking to determine our health seem invasive. Such implementations are supposedly imposed with the greater good in mind and matters of ethics sometimes get thrown under the bus in urgent situations. It makes me think about what’s to come in the future around the world where life becomes ever more integrated into data analytics. Will technology evolve to monitor us day in and day out, analysing risk and treatment without choice. It’s a little frightening but privacy and freedom should always be maintained. It remains to be seen if other countries will throw privacy rules to wind when panic stricken, maybe we will find out in the coming months…
