Sony is Getting Ready for the New Generation

Ah yes, it’s finally that time of decade where the new generation of Consoles come into the spotlight and scramble for market share as the new gen of console gaming establishes itself. It’s a pretty exciting time for console enthusiasts, Sony are already teasing the PlayStation 5 (PS5) on their website. “PlayStation 5 is coming – Launches holiday 2020”, it’s certainly going to be a year of hype generation and marketing. Sony are ready to usher in a new wave gaming using top specs in their unit but power isn’t everything. It remains to be seen how developers take to the new console and games emerge in the starting line up to kick start a release.

With extra power comes great responsibility, it remains to be seen what Sony will do with all the extra oomph under the hood. Higher resolution, better FPs and other quality of life adjustments are to be expected but I am interested to see if any resource has gone into research and development of new gaming projects. PSVR was an entry for many gamers to get a taste of VR gaming but having tried VR from Oculus and HTC Vive, it remains to be seen just where Sony will take this. They have iterated their focus on VR in the upcoming console but with Valve’s Index and a number of other cool VR projects hitting PC, it will be interesting to see what Sony can offer.

There are many leaks across the internet and I’ll dive into this at some point but perhaps one of the most important revelations will be pricing. It will be interesting to see just how much the console will cost in different regions and what perks it will offer. Analysts are keeping a keen eye on markets and predict a launch price just shy of the $500 mark. Personally, I don’t know how to feel about the incrementally increasing prices of console from a consumer level. It ties heavily into the strategy that companies wish to pursue as they target existing and new demographics in to their ecosystem. There is much to talk about when it comes to the social aspect of gaming these days and the PlayStation Network will need to accommodate and offer even more for this new generation of gamers as there will no doubt be a subscription fee tied in. We will finally get to see the console in the next couple of months and all will be revealed, I look forward to seeing it all unfold!
