On The Look Out for The Next Flagship Phone

February is coming to a close and it’s almost time for the rollout of new phones to hit the market. In just over a month, Huawei’s new flagship the P40/Pro is due to hit Chinese retail. Certification submissions reveal a little more about the phone. On paper the phone is set to be quite a powerhouse and there might be a tier above the Pro variant flavour, featuring five lenses including periscope zoom. I am a fan of Huawei and their flagships. Aside from the obvious trade debacle, a new tier above the usual Pro offering has me quite excited. Over the past few iterations of the Mate and Pro series, I have found little reason to upgrade from a current Mate to subsequent Pro line. This new premium (P40ProPE) offering may fill this void and prove to be a worthwhile step before the next Mate surfaces. Some may not know but there have also been other ‘premium’ releases and collaborations of Huawei phones in the past.

Renders of upcoming phones are often accurate enough to grasp general aesthetic appeal that companies have spent months upon months developing. Statement phones like the Galaxy Z flip have started to enter the market so it will be interesting to see if the way of the fold will hang, if so, how will Chinese firms incorporate this into strategy? No official announcements have been made but rumours are always oil to an ever-burning fire. Many have noticed the presence of a dual front facing camera that occupies much screen estate. It seems a little excessive and very much out of line in a phase where most designs are trying to either minimise front facing camera footprint as much as possible or eliminate it altogether through mechanical means. The latest OnePlus is an example of this. I hope Huawei continue towards a more streamlined design that is notchless.

A five-camera setup will create some beautiful wide-angle shots. My older point and shoot has become almost redundant with the optical power that new phones boast today. While phones are still quite a way off from swaying any avid photographer from using their DSLR, a phone that is capable of taking stunning photos along with AI and apps that make editing easier for the average person is a winning combination. It will be interesting to see who will pull ahead to offer something truly beyond what we currently have or have experienced in the past. High refresh screens are cool but It’s about time that the boundaries are pushed beyond taking pictures of the moon. The P40 is certainly one to watch but the upcoming subsequent generation is unknown and exciting.
