Some considerations on the use of GPS in planimetric surveys

Dear readers, GPS is a technological tool that consists of a global positioning system that according to Pacheco and Heberto (2001), uses radio signals that provide reliable positioning and navigation services to civilian users around the world, it consists of satellites in orbit around the Earth, ground tracking and control stations, and user-owned GPS receivers.. W ith this technology, topographic surveys are carried out, which consists of collecting all the necessary information (distances, coordinates), which then allow to be represented on a scale plan and although some specialists mention that they do not issue exact data, it is widely used in some agricultural activities.

On the other hand, topographic plans in Venezuela are an indispensable requirement, in the necessary procedures for regularization in land tenure (agrarian registry), transactions of purchase and sale of farms, credit applications and appraisals. In that sense, the Body in charge of carrying out all aspects related to the regularization of land tenure in Venezuela is the National Land Institute (INTI), which requires agricultural producers, a topographic, georeferenced plan (UTM Coordinates.) in the Venezuelan Geodesic Network (REGVEN), generally these plans must be prepared by professionals who manage the area such as geodesists, civil engineers, agricultural, agronomists, senior technicians and graduates in surveying.

The application of the current Land Law in previous years caused in the country, an excessive alarm in agricultural producers, who, faced with the nervousness caused by invasions and expropriations, are forced to hire the professional service, to obtain a current topographic plan. This has generated an excessive demand for the service, which undoubtedly translates into an increase in the value of the service, making the activity more attractive.

In general, the techniques and procedures used for topographic surveys require the use of measuring instruments such as theodolites and electronic total stations, which require the operator to have skills and abilities, in the use of them, to guarantee the reliability of the information provided. The field phase, that is, the stage of the survey necessary to obtain the information at a distance, and in the case of state-of-the-art equipment requires the investment of time and effort, which depend on the experience of the technician.

The office phase, corresponding to the analysis and processing of the information obtained in the field phase, lead to the elaboration of a scale plan, which is currently favored by the existing technology, which allows to handle these data, through the use of a series of drawing software (CAD), generating files (plans), which can be stored in digital formats, facilitating in turn the reproduction and modification of the same.

In this same order of ideas, it should be noted that the cost of measuring equipment such as theodolite and total stations are high, therefore, some technicians are looking for less expensive equipment and simpler procedures such as GPS navigators. In our geographical area, the use of GPS is common for the topographic survey of the perimeter of the farms, due to their versatility in terms of weight, size and relative low cost, another advantage that makes them attractive is that the information is presented in a simple way, through a series of windows (Windows environment), with different languages and easy access, acquiring skills and abilities by the user in a short time.

The Field phase with the use of these navigators is quite simple, it is only required to walk around the perimeter of the surface to be lifted, and the information is stored by the equipment, which can then be transferred to a computer.

In summary dear readers, GPS have become a useful technological tool for global positioning, providing spatial positions for fixed or moving points, which show the location by coordinates, Currently the technicians of the national land institute use this tool for the delimitation of the production units, since it is a very useful tool for the global positioning system., it is of easy utility for the collection of coordinates that will allow the creation of a topographic plan that a fundamental requirement within the documentation certifying the ownership of the land.

Hello dear @gwajnberg, certainly the GPS, facilitates the work of raising the boundaries of the farms, as you mention facilitates the work, but in case of ceasing to exist, we would continue working as we did before, the ideal is not to create dependence on technology, is to use it properly and not that it uses us.
