Motorola MotoZ - Final Review - RIP

Some of you may have remembered I bought a Motorola MotoZ 2 years ago. I was planning on doing some traveling and I needed a durable phone with a decent camera and lots of hard drive space. I found a MotoZ on sale thru my phone provider and it seemed to have everything I needed.

I bought the phone mainly for the camera. For the most part it took decent pictures but nothing I would have been overly impressed with. The image quality also seemed to deteriorate with time.

Here's a couple of my favorite pics I took with the phone. The first one was a sunset while camping, the other was a motorcycle ride along the Niagara river.

In all fairness,I dropped the phone almost daily. There was a small hairline crack across the lens cover of the camera. The camera was the first thing to go. I'm really hard on my phones.

The phone itself did it’s job over the last couple years. I often used it as a computer, with a bluetooth keyboard. I’d write blog posts while camping, and even do the odd coding job with it.

The 64 gigs of storage lasted me over the last 2 years. I deleted very little and ended up using about half that space.

The screen started to peel. I’ve never had that happen before and the battery has been losing charge over the last month.

I think the most disappointing aspect of the phone is not so much it’s performance over the last couple years but rather the last couple months. I literally just made my last payment on the phone when the camera died. Then shortly after that, I began having charging issues. Besides that, the phone was a pretty reliable piece of kit over the last two years. Still though, I really like to get at least a third year or longer out of my phones. I hate buying new phones. I hate setting them up, I hate learning new features, and most importantly I HATE SPENDING MONEY ON THEM!

This was the first “expensive” mobile phone I’ve purchased, and I was a little disappointed in the end. I am grateful for the 2 years of reliable service it gave me, but I’ll soon be retiring it. If you can find one new at a cheap price, it was reliable for 23 months, handled a couple crypto wallets, 2FA and all my crypto needs. Bluetooth keyboards and sound worked great. Camera was acceptable and you're probably nowhere near as rough with your phone as I am.

I just purchased a new Samsung A20 and I’ll be writing a review on that shortly.

I have been pretty happy with my Moto G6. I don't like to spend lots on phones, but they offer a standard Android experience for reasonable money. I could do with more memory on mine and I had the battery swell up. Bought a replacement for that and you have the advantage of the phone not being sealed. I'd consider another Moto as my next phone. I just don't like that they keep getting bigger.

I'm not a huge fan of big phones either. I loved my little flip phone back in the day. Slipped right in my front pocket, still room for keys, money and whatever. The Moto was good to me, but everything just seemed to start dying at once near the end. Really put the new Samsung A20 to the test today and everything worked out great for me. So far it's fitting my needs perfectly. Loved the price too @ under $200.

Sounds like a good phone for the money. So many people feel they need to have a $1000 phone, but barely use the features.
