The Memes Will Continue Until Connectivity Improves

About 14 15 17 hours and 3 4 energy drinks into our shift.

We have had unforeseen circumstances that have delayed service restoration that out of our line of demarcation. In other words, that which is f*ckulated is under someone else's control.

When I can't dream (that is sleep), I MEME!

Why not have a little fun during network related downtime?

This first meme is a testament to the struggles with my nemesis. That is resource intensive security software that is configured in a manner that kills productivity.

This can be via the restriction of automation capabilities or just pegging out CPU and "fun things" like that which make the Sysadmin game seem "literally unplayable". Often it is overzealous yet novice security professionals that think they are doing the right thing. A phrase that comes to mind is "cutting ones nose off to spite the face".

There's actually an interesting yet morbid story behind the phrase.

One example of these cases is that of Saint Ebba (sometimes called Æbbe the Younger), the Mother Superior of the monastery of Coldingham Priory. In AD 867, Viking pirates from Zealand and Uppsala landed in Scotland. When news of the raid reached Saint Ebba, she gathered her nuns together and urged them to disfigure themselves, so that they might be unappealing to the Vikings.

In this way, they hoped to protect their chastity. She demonstrated this by cutting off her nose and upper lip, and the nuns proceeded to do the same. The Viking raiders were so disgusted that they burned the entire building to the ground with the nuns inside.[3]

The way I see it. Often in the efforts to protect the network from the dreaded Hackerman the sec folks tend to limit negatively impact their own people. I mean it is true that insider threat is a thing but some people can take it a bit too far in my humble opinion. There is some degree of credence to the meme that McAfee is malware which I stated in a previous post.

Or maybe they are trying to protect us from that infamous hacker 4Chan!

An apt analogy would be a person breaking their own arms so they won't punch themselves in the face and then an actual home intruder breaks into your back window.

Good luck with that!

Well, hopefully, your kick game is strong cuz you probably gonna need it!

It probably isn't this impressive but keep practicing!

Now, on to the

The next exhibit in my Windows Sysadmin meme gallery has to do with how much of a pain in the ass an interactive logon can be especially when cryptography is used and the system is remote.

Sometimes, it can feel like pulling teeth

In the wonderful, wacky world of Windows Systems Administration, we have this blessed technology called WinRM (Windows Remote Management) which opens the doors to solve problems quickly and effectively without the need to deal with more pesky authentication prompts because...

Ain't nobody got time for that!

It's can be particularly annoying when you encounter the stuck "Welcome" circle. It's like "Welcome? Welcome to what?!". And the nostalgic video gamer in me says:

Welcome to your Doom!
If that insubordinate last server could talk...

Well, folks, it seems my sleep deprivation is starting to get to me and there is a slight glimmer of hope that I will get to go home as I type this. With that being said, I am going to leave you screen cap with an error message that I thought was actually kind of humorous if you think about it.

It's like the server was telling me to buzz off in particular. Everybody else?! Come on in! But you?!

Nah, bro!

Finally, after being at it for 17+ hours and bossman calling it on the last box, l leave you one last meme that perfectly captures my sentiment before I drive off into the Texas sunrise!

Hope ya enjoyed my humor. Have yourself a fantastic Saturday!

I'll be a zombie visiting family today. Yay!
