Snoring.

One very major sleep disorder that has severe health implications is 'Snoring'.
The noisy breathing sounds one makes when they sleep, in the form of whistles, wheezes, snorting, or rattles is what is called snoring.- Source

Snoring is caused when the individual finds difficulties breathing while sleeping due to obstructed air movement caused by the vibration of the respiratory structures. It is one annoying sleep disorder that makes sleeping a burden as the sufferer intends to struggle with breathing while sleeping and also, causes his or her neighbours some noisy discomfort.

Men snore more than women?

According to research, (though snoring is a general thing) and also from personal experience, men tend to snore more than women and that there is some very serious stereotyping that seems to be true.

4 out of every 10 men snore, in comparison to roughly 3 out of 10 women.

Men are more into snoring than women for some reasons and I will just touch in some of them so we see. Also, you can do some research yourself to see how many men and women you know who snore.

Is the difference in air channel a cause?

A man's air channel is narrower than a woman's and is one major reason men tend to snore more than women?
The narrower the air passage in a person, the harder it is for the flow of oxygen in the normal sleep-breathing activity.

Sleeping and breathing are two activities that are carried out in a subconscious state and having to be saddled with some difficulties can be a hard thing.

When the air channel is small, it causes a kind of forced breathing that will normally put some strain on the respiratory system thereby causing some vibration that will then produce whistling, snorting, wheezing and rattling noises. You some time hear short snorts during sleep time and also short of breath.

Some known causes of snoring in men.

  • Statistically, men consume alcohol more often than women do; Men consume alcohol in excess and that tends to place the amount more in their system than that of the person who drinks normally.
  • Drugs is also a cause of snoring in men and women and since men are more into drug taking that women, they tend to suffer snoring more. *(Note: Alcohol and Drugs are relaxant that causes the weakness of the throat muscles)
  • Men are also prone to smoking more than women and this habit leaves them more vulnerable to snoring as a side effect.
  • Obesity which causes fat to gather in and around the throat is one cause of snoring as well and this is not particular to men alone.
  • Sleep deprivation is one major causes of snoring. When you stay too long away from sleeping, you are most likely to experience some levels of snoring because the body will be too tired and the respiratory system also may have becomes weak from constantly staying awake.
  • Sleeping on one's back, which may result in the tongue dropping to the back of the mouth is another cause of snoring.

Treatment or some self help.

There are various treatments that range from using Orthopedic pillows, Dental appliances, Positive airway pressure (enabled by a machine of some sorts), Surgery and the use of Alternative medicine.

Snoring is not a good thing because with it, comes some very serious health complications. Also as a sleep disorder, it is kinda embarrassing and will always make you not want to nap in public or in a stranger's house.

I once was on a night bus from Abuja to Lagos and one of the passengers sure knew how to snore with some very crazy styles that involved snorting, whistling and even the occasional engine starting and quenching.
I was up awake most of the night because, the sound would just drag me out of my sleep like something was wrong, and I could see the discomfort from other passengers as well.

I think self help is more effective and cheap and one of such self helps is to stop the intake of excessive alcohol, drugs, smoking and also learning to sleep in the right position with the right pillow that will help the head relax well thereby not putting a strain on the respiratory system.
