Hydrogen gas (H2) is an alternative source of energy, as it is flammable. Hydrogen gas can be liberated from water, but electricity is required for the process. New technologies use the sun's energy to produce hydrogen gas to power fuel cells in photocatalytic processes that are a huge step forward for green power.

Hydrogen gas comes primarily from the refining processes of natural gas. Hydrogen gas is a highly flammable gas that can be used in hydrgoen fuel cells as an alternative energy source. Water can be exposed to electricity to produce hydrogen gas, but this requires energy that is often produced by burning coal and oil. We can use green energy sources to produce the electricity to break the water into hydrogen gas including wind or nuclear energy, or we can use light in a new and novel process.

Photocatalytic light processes are being designed using plated surfaces and nanoparticles. Inorganic compounds are plated onto a surface or nanoparticles are utilized in a matrix to mediate the process of splitting water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. The hard part of this process is getting the hydrogen atoms to combine to form H2 and the oxygen atoms to combine into O2. Once the reaction chambers and plated surfaces are established, light can be used to break the water. The source of the light is solar energy, so this is indeed a green-energy technology that can be a part of our green-energy portfolio including nuclear power, solar and wind power.

This method of using light to break water and gain hydrogen gas is a green-energy technology that can help us get more fuel for hydrogen fuel cells that can power automobiles and more. If we take energy from the sun's rays and create hydrogen gas, we store solar power in fuel cells that can power systems when the sun sets. Hydrogen fuel cells can be an intermediary between today's energy portfolio and nuclear power or more efficient and green solid-state batteries.
