Hydrogen power is a green-energy source that can be a bridge between current energy requirements and fusion power. Hydrogen-fuel cells and hydrogen power stands to be a great green-energy source, and can help our economy as well. According to a Department of Energy study, the hydrogen industry could supply and support up to 30 million jobs and become a $2.5 trillion industry by 2050. Initiatives and the reality of the green-energy powerhouse that is hydrogen as a fuel will propel the market in the 2020’s and beyond.

Hydrogen fuel cells are a wonderful way to store energy created by green processes, and the key is finding an energy input that is green and can break water into hydrogen gas and oxygen. The Department of Energy (DOE) is working an initiative called HydroGEN to streamline facilities and processes that can create hydrogen gas from water. The key is to expend less energy to break the water molecules than is produced by the hydrogen.

A major issue with using hydrogen as a fuel source is the transportation problem. Hydrogen is explosive, and must be stored and transported in specially engineered containers under pressurized conditions. It has been proposed that hydrogen gas be converted into formic acid using CO2, and a new method to accomplish this is through bacterial metabolism. The specialized bacteria can convert hydrogen gas into formic acid inside of bioreactors that allow the metabolite to be converted into hydrogen gas that can be used in fuel cells. Formic acid can be transported safely, and the discovery of bacteria that can help us in this unique problem is a blessing to the industry.

Companies have shown interest in hydrogen as a clean energy source that can allow for fuel cell storage of energy and can bridge the gap until nuclear power is commercially viable. The use of bacteria who can stablize and help with hydrogen gas storage is an incredible development.
