Appreciating Science: The Source Of Priceless Happiness

avatar

I do not live in one of the best parts of the world. As far as I can tell, Africa as a whole is not a nation to brag about technological advancements; unless we are comparing this current generation to others that existed centuries ago. I do not come from a wealthy family. I am not among the brightest students in my school. Obviously, I am not even brilliant enough to be called an average student. I do not belong among the cute guys in school neither do I in the neighborhood.

Now there is a conclusion you could have drawn from all these: The fact that I am not the happiest man on earth. Well, you would be amazed to find out that it is just the opposite. In fact, do not be annoyed to hear this but I am happier than your better-half is, to have you.

Now you are wondering how one of the poorest; dullest; ugliest and most-deserted men on earth could be happier than everyone around him. If you care to know, my source of happiness is my appreciation for Science. Do not force it; you cannot understand this if you do not understand Science. You cannot even appreciate what you do not understand.

Sometimes I wonder how the generations that have existed before us managed to cope with life. I just find it hard to comprehend. I could not imagine living in a world where I do not get to control the atmosphere around me. Change the hot air to a conducive cold one with an air condition system; get my laundry done while I sit back; get transported to any destination while I sit, read the magazine and have some chilled drink; instantly connect with friends and family living in thousands of miles away; listen to some cool music while I do some body workouts; wait, would you rather expect me to be sad when I can access all these amenities? Even Pharaoh could not access any of these. Yet he called himself a god!

Life is full of ups and downs. Although it usually looks greener at the other end, we have all got a reason to feel sad. However, understanding what Science has brought to us; how it has made life easier and more convenient; how it has been the government that we never had will make us appreciate it. Enough to live a happy life!
