Fungi Friday - UNDER THE PINE TREES

avatar
(Edited)

Yesterday I went searching for some mushrooms ... big or small, toxic or edible, all the same for me ...

... because I needed them for the post, not for food ...

... so I spent the morning wandering around the small pine-covered peninsula near the port of my hometown, It's an archeological park, once upon a time covered with magnificent Roman villas and a long dock was there too, to welcome ships with rich cargos of oil and wine-filled amphoras and various precious things and materials for this upper-class neighborhood ...

( Enlargeable )

... but that's, if not another story, certainly another part of the story that needs another, a bit different post ... maybe a Wednesday walk one ... in this post, I will glue my view at the fungi population of this place under the pines ...

... there are many cones scattered on the ground ...

( Enlargeable )

... and on some of them ... you can find these small mushrooms ...

... they are sprouting in between the scales of the cone ...

... this one filled with minuscule Collembola ...

.... is slowly dissolving ...

( Enlargeable )

... this other small species is growing between fallen pine needles, directly from the humid ground  ...

... one one of these little pale umbrellas - a fly is resting ... is still warm enough for some limited insect activity during this short autumn days ...

... I was very surprised ... and pleased ... to find this interesting cicada relative out in the open ...

... and even more ...

... to encounter this cool hunter fly ... I followed her for ten minutes or so ... and at one point ...

... she has caught another fly ...

... this is a scene more suitable for spring or summer ...

( Enlargeable )

... but let's continue ...

... with mushrooms ...

( Enlargeable )

... for this is the fungi, not flies, Friday post ...

... and there are many lovely umbrellas ...

... to be seen here ...

( Enlargeable )

... and among all those ...

... parasol life forms ...

... I found also ...

... some very different fungi ...

... like these ones ...

... and this ... fluffy little thing ...

( Enlargeable )

... growing on the small branch fallen from the pine tree ... but the umbrella-shaped mushrooms were in the clear majority ...

... some of them were very difficult to notice ...

... these brown ones were successfully camouflaged on the brown mud and among the fallen twigs and pine needles ...

( Enlargeable )

... on this photograph, I put together two species ... one with pale colors on the brown ... and in the background, the brown one amongst the green ... so they are both very visible ...

... and here is a tiny mushroom growing in the soft new grass ...

... but these elegant mushrooms can come in much bigger version ... these ones are surmounting all the surrounding grass and similarly sized plants ... they look like some strange and beautiful flowers and always add a bit of alien or surreal atmosphere to the place ...

... their beauty though don't last long ... during the same day in which have grown, they already start to look like this ... and soon dissolve into the small amount of dense black gue ...

... in this humid dissolving atmosphere ... I found also this dead and dissolving caterpillar ...

... and now ... with these last few mushroom shots ...

( Enlargeable )

... is time to dissolve this post ... have a great Friday, fungi or of some other sort, wherever on the planet you are ... THE END

... as always in these posts on Steemit, all the photographs are my work ...
