Brains, Brains, BRAINS! [What is a neuron, and the difference between white and grey brain matter]

avatar

After holding a human brain last week, I decided I would put together a video explaining a bit about the brain. The human brain is an incredibly well put together organ with highly advanced methods of communicating and integrating messages throughout the human body. The human brain is the largest brain of all vertebrates relative to body size, weighing approximately 3 pounds (1.4 kg). There are 6 distinct sections which make up the human brain: the brain stem, cerebellum, the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe. Each of these different parts plays its own role in providing functionality to the human experience.

We would see two distinct colors in the brain if we were to cut a brain in half (really there are three colors with the dens nigra producing melanin, but that's just a minute section of the mid brain (brain stem) which we aren't covering here). Nearly half of the brain is made of grey matter, and the other half is made of white matter. Grey matter is made of unmyelinated axons and neuronal cell bodies, with white matter being made of myelinated axons.

Join me in today's episode to learn what all this, and more, means - and how to take care of your brain!
