Let's learn more about outer space

Outer Space

Every 5 year old has an age related idea that they want to become a firefighter or even a policeman, well as strange and weird as my five year old can be he has decided he want to become an astronaut. I asked why and he said that he wants to see all the stars and the planets up close, too see how they work and keep floating in solar space. This coming from him constantly explaining to us what gravitation and evaporation etc is, wasn't that strange. So I am dedicating this post to my intrigued and science "freak" son.

Today we are going to focus on Space

What is space?

Space is a wonderful piece of creation. Their is no air in space which then doesn't allow sound to travel, because sound cannot travel through a vacuum.

Outer space only begins at about 100 km above the Earth, where the shell of the air around our planet, the earth disappears. There is no air to scatter the sunlight and then to produce the blue sky. Space only appears as a black blanket dotted with stars. Space is sometimes regarded as completely empty but the vast gaps between the stars and the planets are filled with huge amounts of thinly spread gas and dust. Even the smallest and emptiest parts of space usually contains a few hundred atoms or molecules per cubic meter.

Within space you will also find many forms of radiation that is dangerous to astronauts. A lot of this infrared and ultraviolet radiation comes from the sun.

Today we are also going to focus on the planets.

First we are going to do a quick quiz to see what we know:

  1. What is largest planet in our solar system?
  2. Which of the following planets does not have rings: Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, Mars?
  3. How long does it take the Earth to complete a full orbit around the Sun?
  4. Is the Sun a planet or a star?
  5. True or false: All of the planets, except Earth, are named after Gods and Goddesses?
  6. What is the hottest planet in our solar system?
  7. Can you unscramble the following word to create the name of a planet: NSURAU?
  8. Which planet is furthest from the Sun?
  9. True or false: The Earth is approximately one-quarter the size of the Moon?
  10. Which planet is known as the Red Planet?
  11. How many inner planets are there in our solar system?
  12. What is the smallest planet is our solar system?
  13. Which planet is closest to Earth?
  14. True or false: Neptune orbits the Sun faster than Jupiter?
  15. Can you name the eight planets in order of their distance from the Sun, beginning with the closest planet first?

Watch this video and then answer the questions a second time:
