The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance.

- Heredotus -

I know things, a lot of things. One such thing is that don't know enough things, and so I seek more knowledge of things. I know that's not the best quote ever coined but it says what I feel about my knowledge and desire for it reasonably well. In short, I don't have enough and continuously seek more.

I was watching a couple fellows in the factory working on the Kenworth prime mover pictured. It's a very tricked-out rig and the owner-driver has spent a lot of money turning it into the piece of automotive artwork it is.

It's in to solve some electrical issues and add some more bling and the lads had to dig deep as this truck had to get back on the road quickly - if the wheels don't roll it's a financial liability - however there were knowledge-gaps that delayed the work requiring a good deal scrambling to attain the necessary knowledge. As usual, the chaps got it done and by now it's in the middle of Australia a few thousand kilometres away...and the company now has additional knowledge for the future. A win-win situation.

20220201_142025_2.jpg

I don't work in the factory, I'm in management and represent the company to the clients. My knowledge-base is different to the electrical technicians, fabricators, mechanics and diagnostic-technicians. I have a basic understanding of what they do of course, and the jobs and roles I've had, indeed life itself, has taught me many other things that provide value and give me the ability to do my job now.

One of those things isn't Microsoft Excel. I'm what I would call a novice-user of that very powerful software program; novice at best.

I can format a little and even add a few basic formulas although only at an entry-level competency; I guess that's a by-product of having had people to do it for me. I still have if I'm honest, although recently the opportunity arose to do a series of training courses on the software and tomorrow is my first one.

It's called Excel Beginner and is supposed to bring me to a level above where I am now. I'll do the follow-up Excel Intermediate afterwards and then probably leave it at that considering I would typically delegate any spreadsheet creation to others anyway. I made this spreadsheet (part shown) in the image and many like it, it's at about the limit of my ability though and anything more complex gets delegated.

ojb.jpg.png

I'm looking forward to the training to be honest. It's a chance to gain some more knowledge, which is always a good thing, and it's a different environment for a day. If you ask me at 11:00 tomorrow I might have a headache through information-overload though so we'll have to see. I hope they have loads of coffee at the training facility although it's in the centre of the city so there's a million cafes around that will full that void if required.

I've done a lot of training in my life with some class-based and some in the field. It's all been valuable though and has added layers of understanding, so far outside of the scope of the training itself usually, and I think that's one of the benefits of an inquisitive mind - The ability to soak in information and knowledge from various sources.

I've known people who are closed to knowledge; they feel they know exactly what they need to and see no need to add to it. I guess if that's a comfortable place for them so be it, I never want to stop learning though and seek knowledge wherever I can which is behind the decision to do the Excel course.

I'll be honest and say I'm not much of a classroom-type but I'll sit there and soak it in and excelerate my understanding of the software. (EXCELerate...See what I did there?) OK, so making up jokes isn't one of my skill-sets, but it was worth a try right?

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind

I do a like a good Herodotus quote (especially if it involves the mandrake men)

If you need any assistance, I know a guy who is a) lazy and b) uses spreadsheets all of the time for work to manipulate numbers as quickly as possible (because he's lazy)...

Haha, you know a lazy Excel guy huh? Sounds like a handy person to know...Spends a lot of time in the factory taking photos of machinery I heard though.

I hope you enjoy your course - maybe it will even inspire you to learn other software a bit more 🙌

I think I'll get some value. It's the sitting in the classroom that I'll not like but if I get bored I'll cause some mischief to entertain myself...Like I did in school.

Good on you for taking up such a course Galen.
I suffer from dyscalculia, so remembering formulas is a kind of self-torture that is rather too painful to endure.
Still, I could not get over my fascination with Excel, so many years ago I signed up for a course... Like a stroke of luck, I got a job offer on that same day and had to forego the course.
Over time, I have taught myself some BASIC Excel that I'd use daily. However, I haven't used it in a while, so a refresher course is in order.

I admire persons especially at the stage of your youth, who are always willing to learn and give something new a try🙌
Best wishes with the course!

Excel is a powerful thing when used to its full extent, or so I'm told. I have very little clue. I mean after all, I am at a certain age where things confound more easily. 🤪

We'll see how the course goes. I think I'll get a lot of value.

Ahh 3mm Aluminium Checker Plate and 2mm Stainless, I love Checker plate Best sheet ever for Bed linings or doors. That stuff takes a kickin and keeps on ticking.

However I hate spreadsheets so I wish you the best of luck, Doing My accounts every month inspires about 3 hours of procrastinating, 2 pots of coffee and finally a whole lot of the Big F word and a few C U Next Tuesdays.

Eventually the spreadsheet is finished and a brief moment of self satisfaction until I remember I have to do the same thing next month.

Let me know how the course goes, might even try one myself if it saves me headaches.

Haha, a few F's and C"s...I get it.

I'll be honest and say I know a little already, self taught, but everything I do is probably happening the long way and so I don't know what I don't know. A company paid course to unfuckerise my Exel skills seems prudent.

I will let you know how it goes and whether it was worth it.

You will like it. They will probably show you ways to do things that you do in a quicker faster way which is always good. Then the Intermediate course will cement your Titanhood to the next level!

I'm going to be an MS Excel geek. The formuliser they'll call me. I'd rather the equaliser but someone took that name already.

The svinehunds!! Still, the formuliser has a nice ring to it. Maybe Brittney Spiers will immortalise you in song!!

Oops I excellerated again.

That's her next big hit. I'm going to cash in on the royalties and will get to meet the great one herself. It's going to be epic.

You deserve it. She will probably get you to create a pivot table for her and make it an NFT she can opt on three wall of her virtual house.

I see great things ahead!

NFT pivot tables. Ah yes, wetdrram inspiring things indeed.

Now to work out what a pivot table and NFT is...

Hey Samantha...

Gimme my phone back you rascal.!!

She is right tho. I have dabbled in excel. There was a spreadsheet program given to me by Landstar that we plugged our costs into and it spat out all the different costs broken down every way imaginable. Quite a powerful tool to track our costs.

Yeah, I didn't want to identify the prime mover to preserve the identity of the owner-driver. It's a legit rig though.

Herodotus was full of wisdom. Or at least that's what we call it now. Maybe back then he was just paid by the word. A pity he wouldn't have had a spreadsheet to help him calculate his per-word rate.

He probably dictated the words and had a bunch of scribes to record them. Now I think of it maybe I need a few of them also, it would save me a lot of typing.

Thats awesome. Good luck with your course. I did learn a little bit of excel long time ago, but its been too long that I forgot most of it, since I didn't get to experience /work with it very much at all.
I bet you're going to learn a lot of good stuff.

It was a good course and I learned a lot of what I didn't know. There was a lot I did know but the new stuff will complement that nicely.

Have you always wanted knowledge? As a kid did you crave it? As an adult I do, and there are a million subjects and nowhere near enough time, but as a kid not so much. I wonder if that is typical. My son is a natural-born knowledge collector however.

Of course there are exceptions to knowledge craving. My son was explaining to me a googolplex and I was like stop - just stop. Some things just hurt your brain:)

Good question.

Things always intrigued me and I had a feeling that I needed to know what they were all about rather than just take it for granted. I block out a lot though, these days, preferring to deepen my knowledge on things that matter rather than those that do not. There's a lot of noise out there, and a lot or rubbish that people think they need/ want to know, but don't need to.

I have difficulty prioritizing. I have a tendency to put that folder from my Latin high school class with all those Latin phrases that I want to re-memorize next to permaculture. Pretty sure permaculture should be in first place, who really needs to know Latin phrases? Forget it - neither is first place - the TCM books are first place! All that yin and yang and the three treasures is good stuff. Sigh.

Lol, I can imagine your brain actually thinking all of this. Legit.

This is one of my favourite quotes as it reminds me that I'm responsible for my own success and the strength of one's thoughts and attitudes...Get them right and the right actions follow. 😉

Google knows everything a lot, but it's fallible.
