Understanding makes it so much easier to remember...

Earlier today I attended an online class that dealt with the topic of Neuroscience and the brain. I have no clue how I ended up there, but I guess it caught my interest as I read about the positive effects of exercise on the brain in a book earlier this year. I thought, why not try to learn a little bit more about the brain and how it works.

The truth is, I learned very little about this in school, so I know just as little about the brain as I do about how to build a rocket... that is, very little!

The classes are short, meaning that you can watch one "class" in ten minutes, take a break, stop for some days, and then continue with the next section whenever you have the time.

The frontal part controls our personality...

But, the first section dealt with how the frontal brain controls our personality. It was interesting, but I immediately met some words that were hard to understand. It also makes it harder than English isn't my first language, but that just makes it all the more fun.

So, the frontal brain, that is, the pre-frontal cortex and the underlying frontal lobe, has a big influence on our personality as this is the part of the brain that functions as a command center. Here we keep the ability to be patient, ethical knowledge, and the ability to pay attention to something. But, what would happen if your frontal brain would get damaged? You would most likely have a way harder time paying attention, you wouldn't be able to treat other people as nicely as before, and you would lack patience... all because these abilities are hidden in the frontal part of your brain.

But, why did I write that understanding makes it so much easier to remember in the topic?

Easier to remember if you understand...

In the lecture, the teacher spoke about the cortical areas and the subcortical areas. At first, I tried to memorize what these words meant, but it was kind of hard. That is when I suddenly realized that it is much easier to remember if I simply understand the words.

Cortical, means next to the (cerebral) cortex (which is the outer part of the brain). So, the cortical areas are those in direct contact with the cerebral cortex.

The sub-cortical are those not in direct contact with the cortex, but further away from the cortex. Understanding the words made it all the easier to actually understand it. And thus I also quickly understand that brain parts such as the hypothalamus, the thalamus, the amygdala, the hippocampus and others are parts of the sub-cortical areas, while the cortical areas are in charge of our visual impressions, motorized tasks and much more.

No matter what, I still have a lot to learn, but I am for sure heading in the right direction! And it is for sure easier to remember if you actually understand, instead of just trying to memorize (and then forget).

It can be challenging, and it might seems more complicated at first, but if you first spend some energy trying to learn something, you will actually do well investing that extra energy really trying to understand it.
