IBM promises 1,000 qubits in a quantum computer by 2023

The qubit is a fundamental element of data storage and processing in quantum computers, which is why the practicality of construction depends on it.

And with the current quantum solutions from IBM available to customers, such as Falcon and Hummingbird, we have 27 and 53 qubits respectively, the move to 1121 will be a huge breakthrough.

Of course, it will not take place right away, because the company has announced that it already has a computer with a capacity of 65 qubits (or rather improved the aforementioned Hummingbird), in the next two years it will try its hand at 127 (Eagle) and 433 (Osprey) qubits,

to finally reach the aforementioned 1121 qubits and finally… million qubits, because that's what IBM is striving for.

According to the company, this will be the moment that has a chance to change quantum computers and create a completely new class of data processing capabilities, which is led by a long-term strategy.

Because although modern quantum computers are extremely effective, beating traditional ones in solving some problems, it is only a fledgling industry that can ultimately count on more sophisticated tasks, such as modeling chemical bonds and reactions in a previously unavailable way, calculations that allow better understanding and understanding

the rules of the universe's functioning or looking for traces of life in space, but this does not mean that quantum computers do not have more mundane tasks, on the contrary - various industries see them as a way to design new materials for solar panels or batteries for electric cars, accelerate deliveries,

investing money with greater profit or inventing drugs for the most dangerous diseases.

All because the calculations that today take many days for the world's fastest supercomputers can be performed by quantum computers in a few seconds.

It is worth emphasizing that more qubits does not immediately guarantee better performance or power, but is a key step into the future.

And although we still have to wait a bit to see it all with our own eyes, IBM is gradually implementing its assumption of the annual doubling of the quantum volume, a measure that reflects not only the number of qubits, but also their data processing capacity.
