Elon Musk is preparing a new generation of efficient batteries for electric cars and airplanes

Elon Musk wrote on his Twitter profile that the great revolution in the world of batteries is approaching all kinds of electric vehicles.

The head of SpaceX wants to offer mass production of lithium batteries with a capacity of 400 Wh per kilogram of mass in 3-4 years.

Currently, in the most powerful version of the Model S, cells with a capacity of 100 KWh, weighing approx. 700 kg, are installed.

In 3 years, they are due to weigh only 250 kilograms with the same capacity, which means that automotive companies will be able to produce much lighter vehicles that will offer much better performance and ranges.

This in turn will make them more and more popular.

But that's not all of the advantages of the new generation of batteries.

The cost of producing 1 KWh cells is expected to fall below the psychological limit of $ 100.

For us, it will mean the possibility of buying cheaper electric vehicles than is currently the case. Batteries with a capacity of 400 Wh per kilogram of mass are also an introduction to the production of electric aircraft.

Experts believe that with such efficiency and low battery weight, we can already start seriously thinking about building fully environmentally friendly air vehicles.

And it is not only about passenger planes, but also about flying cars (see here). Elon Musk does not hide that he wants to build a flying taxi from Tesla with an electric drive in the future.

It can transport passengers of super-fast flights between world metropolises on Starship ships from cities to the sea launch pad.

The billionaire is also waiting for this moment with his other projects, namely the electric Semi truck and the Roadster supercar, both vehicles will need really efficient and light batteries so that their owners can enjoy the ride and their efficiency.

In the case of Semi, these will be huge savings on transport, and the Roadster will be nothing but cosmic performance, which has not been offered in the history of any mass-produced vehicle.

We'll learn more about new battery technologies at the Battery Day event in September.
