Supplement meant for Bodybuilders may be key to Long Life
Research on mice fed alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), a bulking-up supplement for bodybuilders, shows that they age slower than mice fed normally, more so the females.
Gordon Lithgow and Brian Kennedy from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and colleagues fed AKG to 18-month old mice (equivalent to 55 human years) for up to 21 months. This means they live up to 39 months, while the average controlled environment mouse barely lives up to 36 months. The females did better with a median of 8%-20% life extension.
The reason this is big is the fact that AKG is a natural part of the human metabolic process, raising its safety profile. Other anti-aging drugs currently being used are rapamycin and metformin, the latter being primarily subscribed to diabetics.
