Learning stuff long forgotten

Having two school aged kids has made me realise how much stuff I've forgotten from my school days. I'm shocking at math, don't have a clue what they're going on about with English homework and am pretty terrible on the science front.

One of my favourite subjects back in the day (30 odd years ago now) was electronics. One of my final projects was a 4ft model of the Eiffel Tower with lots of lighting fitted. The lights didn't do anything fancy, but I was still chuffed with it.

I was browsing eBay for Christmas presents at the beginning of the week and found Electronics for Dummies for just over a fiver; I couldn't resist. The wife was busy with a training course yesterday so I'd be running the kids around to gymnastic classes, of course they can't be in the same one, so knew I'd have a good few hours in sat in the car waiting around.

I managed to make good progress. I quite enjoy the "for Dummies" books as, well I'm the perfect audience. They can be a bit silly, even pathetic in places but they aren't generally a dry read. Refreshing on how differently electrons behave around the nucleus of atoms between conductors and insulators was jolly interesting. I read on last night and woke up wanting to do something practical. It was time to break out the Arduino.

Ok, following instructions and shoving components in a breadboard is hardly hardcore engineering and to be honest, I still didn't really have a clue what's going on. I was fun all the same though and I decided to get a little festive.

Playing about with the Arduino IDE is always a bit of fun and usually ends up with me breaking the code. The above was the second project of the day with the first being setting up a buzzer and controlling its buzzing with the heat of my hand.

Watch out Steve Wozniak!

I'd like to play around with an Arduino. I do have a few Raspberry Pi of various sorts. I have hooked some of those up to breadboards to do some simple tricks. Just turning on an LED with code is satisfying. I have a scrolling display I can put on one. I had that displaying crypto prices ages ago. I should revive that.

Have you got the kids interested in it too? I envy the stuff they can play with these days.

You could use the #stem tag on this. Also worth using #proofofbrain. You can earn extra tokens on Hive Engine.

I’ve tried to get the girls interested but their attention span isn’t quite there. Eldest uses a BBC Micro Bit at school and enjoys programming that. Santa has been looking out for one but they’re like rocking horse sh…

Keep looking. I'm sure there must be some around. I've not actually played with those. Even if they don't stick with it you can use it.

Awesome man. Never too old to learn.

I’m definitely with you as being in the ‘For Dummies’ demographic for most things. Also terrible at maths. Always will be. Although I picked up a book on how to approach maths differently, the concept and philosophy was amazing and really attractive… I got lost four pages in 🥴🤦🏻‍♂️

You thinking of applying some of your refreshed skills?

I’d like to think so but not really then inventive or creative type. Possibly an extended midlife crisis 🙂.

Saying that, I am getting to grips with things I couldn’t get my head around when younger. I very much agree never to old to learn … unless it’s maths. Maths can do one.

Ahaha this looks like a really funny thing to do. I was considering buying myself something similar so that I could play with my kids through cool and basic programming tasks and projects. I am still unsure this will be the Xmas present, but who knows... ;)

Looks like fun. I remember getting electronics kits as a kid and would be so excited by a flashing LED. Now kids can build cities on an iPad. I still enjoy flashing LEDs.

Nothing wrong with a flashing LED. I did that with a Raspberry Pi a while back. Bit overpowered for the job, but still fun.
