At the end of the 1980s, under the reign of Juan Carlos I of Spain and Hassan II of Morocco, state companies were created in each country that symbolized the "first stone" of the construction of an underwater tunnel that would join the continents of Europe and Africa through the Strait of Gibraltar.

For the construction of this pharaonic project, two options were considered: a bridge or a tunnel that would cover the thirteen kilometers of distance that separate the two continents and finally the development of a tunnel was chosen, but the political relations between both countries have not always been cordial so the experiment was postponed several times.

But now it seems that they have revived the project again and in his recent visit to Rabat, the Spanish transport minister Óscar Puente intends to rescue the project and prepare a new meeting "as soon as possible" between the two state companies created in the 80s to revive the construction and begin studying the necessary infrastructure.

The work is not trivial and over four decades different alternatives were proposed, the shortest part has the disadvantage of being over a canyon that reaches eight hundred meters deep so it was necessary to consider another area further west that "only" It is three hundred meters in its deepest part.

Finally, the route chosen by the experts would connect Punta Paloma Playa with the Cape Malabata Lighthouse, near Tangier, and will have to go down 500 meters below the water surface and then go up with a slope that allows it to be overcome by a railway and still has to be taken up by elevator in the last section.

But this type of adventure not only requires will, it is a very complicated job and therefore very expensive, the last estimate was made thirty years ago at 13,000 million Euros and today it is estimated that it would cost double that.
Although we must also take into account the development opportunities not only for Spain and Morocco but also for the rest of Europe.

Thats a pretty interesting project. I'm assuming there would be some pretty good economic benefits particularly for Spain and Morocco. Would be great to see.
