Citizen Science: Project FeederWatch -- Count #10 Report 2019-2020 Season w/Original Photos

Citizen science is a great way to involve children and adults in discovery and contribute to scientific research and conservation. Project FeederWatch through Cornell University is a great way to get involved in citizen science. You can learn more at the Project FeederWatch website.

I typically watch birds on Saturday and Sunday. This is my report for 11-12 January 2020.

Saturday was sunny.

Sunday, 12 January 2020

Sunday was cloudy with snow in the afternoon. Precipitation amounted to 0.05 inches of water in the form of snow.

High: 27 (F) / -2 (C)
Low: 13 (F) / -10 (C)

Winds from the East Southeast
Average Wind Speed: 6.2 mph
Highest Gust: 19 mph

Bird Watching Notes

On Saturday morning there was snow on the ground from an overnight snowstorm.

Later in the day a coyote was in the field just behind the bird feeders. The coyote was hunting for small critters beneath the snow.

On Sunday a squirrel found his way beneath the feeders to eat the peanuts that has fallen to the ground.

I didn't show what the coyote was catching because I thought it might be a little too graphic. I counted three moles that the coyote caught and ate. The moles were a good size too.
My neighbor had quite a time trying to kill moles in his yard. It seems like the coyote had no problems at all. I haven't shown the pictures to my neighbor yet.

Great data! Love that you included shots of the coyote. I am to far east in Wisconsin to see that Harris's Sparrow but all of your other birds are frequent visitors at my feeders, too. Resteeming and. !Tip
