Russia who announced long ago that they are going to make their own sovereign internet is starting to make waves around it.

On the first of October, the news came across the tech media that Russia just passed The "Sovereign Internet" law to create its own internet. This was supported and proposed by the Russia president, Vladimir Putin and a couple of lawmakers. The aim is to be different from the world and have total control over the internet of Russians just like the Chinese. Whilst some Russians understand that their data is not private anymore if this should happen, they protest against the law.

Later after the Sovereign Internet was passed another bill was passed by the Russia parliament to ban Smartphones that do not come with Russia's pre-installed software.

As of December 4th, Russia has started planning to make own Wikipedia and has invested $31 to make it happen. This decision was taken with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, at a meeting Russian National Council held in November.

"Regarding Wikipedia […] It’s better to replace it with the Great Russian Encyclopaedia in electronic form" - Quoted from a report by Russia news agency.

The domain of the Russian Wikipedia is said to be bigenc.ru and estimated to be finished in 2022 with a whooping of 2 billion rubles, $31 million dollars pledged for the project by the government.
