Very good and thought-provoking article @jaki01. As I know that you like (safe) bets a lot I wonder what you think about Pascal's wager? Blaise Pascal once argued that betting in favour of god's existence comes very close to making a safe bet.

Even though I can completely follow his arguments, I'm also an agnostic myself.

Pascal presupposes that if God did exist he would reward people who believe in him ... However it could also be that God doesn't care if anybody believes in him. Actually it could also be that God punishes only these people who believe in him. :-) As I don't know 'who' God is (assumed he does exist) I also cannot know if he prefers people who believe in him or people who don't believe in him. ;-)

Very true. Thus, technically you would have to make a bet on the existence of god and on his behaviour with regards to believers. However, the rewards would still be infinite if god exists and if he rewards his believers.

Really safe bets don't require so many 'IFs'. :-)
