Did you think a book from 1550 will be alive today and also be playing a major role in the way stories are being told, seen and interpreted? Well, your guess or rather answer should be just as good as mine.

1550 is a long time away and having to see stuffs from that time is just simply magical and worth looking at and taking a read from. Stories done in writing are one of those few things that can actually outlive its time and venture into one that has no idea what it is or where else it will be going to.

The Facetious Nights of Straparola- first published 1550-1553.

This book, The Facetious Nights of Straparola is the first European storybook to contain fairy-tales. Yes, for real.

Long story short, before 1550, there were no storybook ever written with fairytales in it.
Fairytales were frowned upon in those days and deemed heretical and people are forbidden to talk about them for fear of having it corrupt their religious mindset. There were stiff penalties that followed violators.

I Feel Blessed!

The book was written by The Father of Fairy Tales, Giovanni Francesco Straparola an Italian author and fairy-tale collector.
Originally published with 74 stories, the book has been adapted by authors like, Madame d'Alnoy, Charles Perrault, The Grimm Brothers, Carlo Gozzi and Giambattista Basile.

The book has continued to be improved on with some amazing stories that you already have seen in movies or read about over the years.

What are fairy-tales?

According to Wikipedia, "a fairy tale, wonder tale, or magic tale is an instance of a folklore genre that takes the form of a short story and features entities such as dwarfs, dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches, and usually magic or enchantments."

Did you know, Puss in Boots was first featured in this 1550 book?

Did you know the now famous Puss in Boots was one of many fairy-tale stories from the book? Yes, it is and it has been exceptional right from the very first time it was penned over a gazillion years ago.

What did I learn from the book?

The Facetious Nights of Straparola is a classic and it the start of some amazing stories like Puss in Boots, The Pig King, Maestro Lattantio and His Apprentice Dionigi, Costanza Costanzo etc.

I have enjoyed reading most of these stories from the past and having to know other good stories through this book.

Let me end with this little story below:
A short story from Puss in boots.

One day, the king decides to take a drive with his daughter. The cat persuades his master to remove his clothes and enter the river which their carriage passes. The cat disposes of his master's clothing beneath a rock. As the royal coach nears, the cat begins calling for help in great distress.

When the king stops to investigate, the cat tells him that his master the Marquis has been bathing in the river and robbed of his clothing. The king has the young man brought from the river, dressed in a splendid suit of clothes, and seated in the coach with his daughter, who falls in love with him at once.- Source and more reading.
