Math Contest #17 [1 SBI]

avatar

Here you can keep your brain fit by solving math related problems and also earn SBI or sometimes other rewards by doing so.
The problems usually contain a mathematical equation that in my opinion is fun to solve or has an interesting solution.
I will also only choose problems that can be solved without additional tools(at least not if you can calculate basic stuff in your head), so don't grab your calculator, you won't need it.
↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓

Every friday and tuesday(most of the time and depending on your timezone)!

Rules

No upvote, No resteem, No follow required!

I will give 1 SBI to 1 random person who put a correct or partly correct solution of the problem in a comment.

You have 48 hours to solve it.

And one more thing: If there are infinitely many solutions, I only want general solutions or integer solutions!

Problem

After the "drawing contest" last time I want to get back to some formulas again:

This might look scary at first because of the high powers, but it is actually easier than it looks.

To everyone who already participated in a past contest, come back today and try a new problem(tell me if you don't want to be tagged):
@addax @ajayyy @athunderstruck @bwar @contrabourdon @golddeck @heraclio @hokkaido @iampolite @masoom @mmunited @mytechtrail @ninahaskin @onecent @sidekickmatt @sparkesy43 @syalla @tonimontana @vote-transfer @zuerich

In case no one gets a result(which I doubt), I will give away the prize to anyone who comments.

@contrabourdon sponsors this contest with 2 STEEM weekly.
You can support him by using a witness vote on untersatz, so he can further support this and other contests.

I agree with @sparkesy43, because after taking n8 it turns into

4n2 - 2n - 1 = 0

and, there is no way to make it zero with any positive or negative number.

So, the correct answer is "n = 0".

That's wrong.
There are two solutions for 4n² - 2n - 1 = 0
They just aren't integers, that's why you didn't find them.

Hahaha ... It gets interesting ... My mathematical skills got rusty. I didn't even think about the quadratic formula, last time used it in mid 90's, I think.

Two solutions are (1+sq.rt(5))/4 & (1-sq.rt(5))/4 where, a = 4, b = -2 & c = -1

There are 3 solutions:
x1 = 0
x2 = 0.809017
x3 = -0.309017
