The Washington Post

In Australian lands, the New Year has come very troubled because the reception was in the midst of a dense and extensive cloud of smoke that is just one of the direct results of the fires that arose from the large temperature increases. A very sad situation and who has been arousing the concern and frustration of millions of people (not only in Australia, but also in other countries).

In addition to all the upheavals that have already happened and have been much discussed (deaths of people, endangered species of animals, air loss, destruction of houses), one issue came back in full force: global warming and its devastating consequences. Even with so many obvious findings, there are people who don't believe in it... On the other hand, there are people who not only believe in this reality, but also fight against it.

In response to what is happening in Australia, people in many places have organized themselves to strongly protest against the public policies that the government has been applying and especially for the lack of more striking and better planned actions. So far, the measures implemented have not been as sufficient as they should be and this can easily be seen in all the disasters that have happened so far.

Part of the burning is a natural process (and the population understands this), but the main part of it is because of the direct action of humans who neglect the care that must be taken to preserve nature. The people who are using the protests to fight and change this scenario have a direct target: Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who has been blamed for the country's disastrous situation.

The cities that are concentrating the biggest protests (at least those that are having the greatest effects) are: Brisbane, Canberra (which is the capital of the country), Melbourne and Sydney. Among the main demands of the protesters are the following items, those that are considered as most urgent:

  • A greater commitment of the rulers regarding the creation of preventive public policies to avoid this kind of tragedy;

  • Secure compensation for volunteer firefighters who have been fighting so bravely to put out the fires;

  • Emergency housing and compensation for those paying for accommodation after their houses burnt down.

There are two types of people participating in protests and rallies across the country: those who are already accustomed to protesting for some cause and those who have never been part of a protest (including children and babies). This latter group claims that they are participating because they think they are defending an important cause and that it is worth fighting for a better world.

Protests have spread rapidly and so far have been peaceful (without the presence of physical violence and boiling down some slogans and themed boards). Although the police are trying to disperse the groups, they remain strong and are only making noise by disrupting traffic and blocking access to some of the city locations that are most likely to be visited. of a greater good.

All actions are linked to the preservation of the environment and the efforts of the demonstrations are pointing in one direction: the frequent oscillations that are altering the natural state of the climate. This subject has been discussed for a long time, but whenever a more alarming situation happens, it is re-commented and each time the approach goes deeper and deeper.

Each protest has its own identity, but all have the same essence and the intention is to make everyone understand two things: global warming exists and that the renowned authorities / business owners of large industrial empires who can help prevent it doing absolutely nothing important to prevent that from happening.
