Useless information #80 - Nokia: much more than a cellphone producer

Nokia has been very versatile along the years

Many may know Nokia as the cellphone company that used to be a superstar and wasn't able to keep up with the times.

Well... it may be partially true but there is also a fact that Nokia is an expert in survival. For starters, it's not a young company. It was founded in 1865 as a pulp mill. After that came an electricity generation business, followed by a rubber business.

Nokia Corporation was officialy created in 1967 by merging three previously independent companies. The major businesses were then forestry, cable, rubber and electronics.
Military equipment such as communicators and gas masks were some of outputs as well, along with telephone switches, capacitors and chemicals.

Through the aquisition of communication focused companies (starting in the 1970's), Nokia became a major player in the sector.

A very different phase came later when Nokia sold some of its businesses such as the tyre business and a computer division!

Nokia thrived for several years due to its reliable and affordable cellphones.
More recently, Nokia sold its mobile devices division and focused on network equipment.

Compared to the spotlight it used to have, Nokia seems to be now under the radar but the company keeps inovating, has a very strong research capability and is active in the business world.
