The flowering Bottle brush

The bottle brush tree gets its name from its striking, brush-like flowers that resemble a
bottle brush. These flowers are typically bright red, but can also be found in pink, yellow, and white. They are made up of many small, tubular flowers that are grouped together to form a dense, cylindrical shape. The flowers are usually produced in the spring or early summer and are popular with hummingbirds and other nectar-loving birds.

The bottle brush tree is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 20 feet tall. It is hardy and adaptable to a range of soil types and climates, making it a popular ornamental plant for gardens and parks. It is also used as a hedge or screen plant, and is tolerant of coastal conditions.

btbrush4.jpg The tree, also known as Callistemon, reproduces through seed propagation or by taking cuttings from mature plants. To propagate through seed, collect the seed pods from the tree when they turn brown and dry. Next, sow the seeds in a well-draining soil mixture and keep it moist until germination, which can take several weeks to a few months.

To propagate through cuttings, select a healthy stem from a mature plant and
cut it into 4-6 inch sections. Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting, dip the end in rooting hormone if available and plant it in a well-draining soil mixture. Keep the cutting in a warm and humid environment until roots have formed, which can take several weeks to a few months.
