On facts

Something I don't usually agree with is the indiscriminate use of the word "facts" in modernity. Facts are, in the colloquial use of language, statements that claim to be absolute, irrefutable and unquestionable truths, and therefore cannot be doubted.

The reality is that this word is used to establish opinions, generally accepted by public opinion, or by experts, as truths, but that does not mean that they cease to be opinions.

I don't think they exist. So is. It seems to me that the so-called facts are really opinions that cannot be questioned because they have become deeply rooted in a person until they become a dogma, and that they cannot be questioned because if so, it can destroy the entire worldview that a person may have.

Not even the "scientific facts", those are a great chimera, because science does not provide fact or absolute truths, science provides theories that can be tested, probable knowledge that in any instance can be refuted. It is called falsificationism, and it is one of the pillars of the scientific method.

Many are those who have believed in history possessing a piece of the truth to base their own versions of reality, their own worldviews, their own truths, which do not admit opposition or contrary views, and who are so irrational as destructive.

And this is because believing to have the truth is the easiest way to get away from it.

In my opinion, this magic word, which is capable of turning any dialogue into discussion, should not be used so recurrently, perhaps ever, because it makes us arrogant and less tolerant with the opinions of other people, who may, or may not, be as valid as ours.

Truth is something that is always in the process of being achieved, and that can never be obtained, it is an eternally unattainable standard, this is true for science, and it should also be true for us, in this way we will be susceptible to change our minds for others more accurate, and perhaps we will not be surprised when it is shown that the position we defend so much is wrong.

He said, 'Stop doing wrong things and turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven is almost here.'(Matthew 3:2)

Question from the Bible, Does the Church of God judge those outside the Church?

I cannot agree more on that. I am fed up with "facts" and the abuse of the term and I try to avoid it. Unfortunately in English the translator often gives me the expression "as a matter of fact" and often I stumbled upon it and thought "that's not what I really was saying". I prefer the term "indeed" which covers a different translation and meaning. Avoiding terms is a good advice. I think of a very humorous interview with Heinz von Förster where he and his dialogue partners agreed on paying 5 bucks whenever someone used the word "truth" or "reality".

I would say that most people don't even know the scientific method and requirements to which every study is obliged. It is also said by scientists themselves that "science is the new religion or holds strong dogmas". People tend to overestimate the findings and their knowledge through scientific researches. As one result in modern times the average human thinks of himself as unable to judge things for himself as he lacks expertise in almost every field of science.

I have nothing against the attempt wanting to stay as clean as it can get but in the end no human can claim to be truly objective cause he is not aware of his own biases. Scientists themselves who admit and know that would never speak about absolute certainty or undeniable facts. But media does.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Totally agree. It may be that many look in science for a new kind of religion to fill the gap left by the others, I mean, everyone is looking for something to trust, looking for certainties, although it doesn't have to be that way.

I sometimes use "in fact", although not with the meaning of undeniable facts.

Anyway... Regards!
