(Edited)

In my philosopher introductions series, today I will introduce you to Xenophanes, the 3rd Thinker of the hazel school. While introducing this philosopher, I wanted to introduce you in two parts. In one part, I wanted to introduce his life and works, and in the second part, his theology, that is, his speculation about God.

His life and works Xenophanes is the 3rd thinker of the Elea school. He lived between 570 and 478 BC. While Xenophanes' interests varied widely, he more often put forward the Eleanian metaphysics, which denied the multitude and advocated Unity, opposing theology or the notion of an anthropomorphic god. He became famous for his impersonal conception of a single god. He is considered the founder of the Elea School by Plato and Aristotle. Although he is famous for his epistemology, he is prominent in the history of philosophy mainly with his views on religion. Xenophanes, who is also considered a poet, produced works in the style of poetry. Today, only fragments of approximately 40 lines of his 2 works on nature and mocking poems remain.

theology
Xenophanes' theology or his views on god.
Two different views occur on this subject, one of which is negative and one that seems destructive and the other is positive and what seems constructive. In his view that occurred in two different phases, in the first phase, there are his criticisms of Homer and Hesiodian anthropomorphic polytheism. At this stage, it shows that he consists of his negative criticisms about God. In the second phase, he puts forward his own understanding of God, which he criticizes, which he replaces, which shows his positive view of his acquaintance. First of all, Xenophanes criticizes the gods for showing them immoral, on the basis of which there is a much more fundamental criticism of anthropomorphism.
Xenophanes says that it is neither possible nor necessary to evaluate God in an anthropomorphic way. Xenophanes was of the opinion that mainly people created diagnoses by objectifying their images of themselves and deifying themselves.
Xenophanes reduces it to absurdity by saying that animals would do the same thing, that is, if possible, animals would make their gods look like themselves. After vigorously criticizing his own view of God as his familiar view, polytheism, he put forward a positive doctrine of god. According to him, the divine reality is not many, as it is thought, but one. He sees the unity of God as a logical consequence of God's being the greatest, that is, the most perfect being. This requires the god to be immobile or unchanging. God is the uncreated and indestructible being, he is eternal. He is also an all-knowing and all-seeing being. Xenophanes envisions God as a living, sensitive and intelligent being. In addition to knowing everything, he is an omnipotent being, in other words, he moves everything, although he is motionless, and he does this only with the power of his mind.

Teolojisi
