Panda life and physiology

//A bear necessity//

Pandas, the gentle bear that has some resemblance to raccoons. Often seen to be gnawing on a diet of bamboo, these bears are regarded as a docile giant. While they are observed to follow an herbivorous diet, scientific research shows that their bodies are perfectly capable of living as a carnivore. Further genetic research that their bodies contain genome that is characteristic of a typical carnivore. Over millions of years, pandas have adapted to their environment but are still endangered today. Understanding animals is a great part of science, aside from genetic study, physiological study is another fascinating aspect when looking at how pandas get out and about in their daily lives.

//Technical master//

Pandas are known to go about their day with as little urgency as possible. There is no hurry in the life of a panda but pandas have been shown to display bouts of athleticisms when climbing trees. Pandas can weigh between 160kg (350lb), a significant mass that would require great power to manoeuvre. Pandas feature a smaller frame compared to the rest of the bear family yet their ability to climb makes them somewhat acrobatic. Technique is the game changer for pandas as they make use of their large head for extra support when climbing. Rotation, grip and support are provided by the head and pandas are able to achieve climbing prowess through this technique. The head of a panda has been dubbed as its “third paw” and provides much needed assistance in climbing.

//Adapt and survive//

As mentioned, pandas are endangered and have a tough time surviving and thriving as a species. I would like to think that over the many years, this climbing technique is yet another adaptation that the monochromatic giants have had to make in order to survive. Height is a great asset in survival and will allow the bears to escape many predators that would otherwise try to attack from the ground. It shows that pandas will react with appropriate urgency when absolutely needed. While they seem to be lazy and clumsy in their daily activities, their intelligence is embodied in many other aspects where it counts. It isn’t easy being a panda but understanding these great animals reveals a loveable and wise creature that has adopted an herbivorous way of life, making better use of its surrounding environment and keeping away from danger.
