E.O. Wilson has been long a hero of mine, for his indefatigable quest to learn of eusocial insects, particularly ants, and how beneficial this quest has been to humanity and understanding ourselves, and our place in the world.
The Scientist has a pretty good write up about his life and work. He's been one of the giants of biology since before I was born, and I already feel his absence.
