At last the Civil Aviation Authority have provided more information which UK drone users should take heed of, as registration of your model aircraft and 'proof of brain' (i.e. learning!) is required no later than the 30th November 2019.

The UK’s new Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme will go live on 5 November 2019 (please note that you cannot register before this date).

So, no need to bother YET, but best to add this date to your calendar to remember to register, to be within the law. Delving deeper into the information:

Anyone responsible for a drone or unmanned aircraft (including model aircraft) weighing between 250g and 20kg will need to register as an operator. The cost for this will be £9 renewable annually.

Basically, if you own and fly your own drone in the UK, you will fall into this category. You will need to register, take the test and pay the fee. 9 quid is not bad at all though.

Anyone flying a drone or unmanned aircraft (including model aircraft) weighing between 250g and 20kg will need to take and pass an online education package. This is free and renewable every three years.

If your dad, sibling, dog or mate has a drone and you fly it for fun, you'll have to do this test. It will basically just be about the Drone Code, which all drone users should know or at least have basic understanding of.

The new regulations have these three main requirements. You must:

  1. Pass an online test to get a flyer ID if you want to fly a drone or model aircraft - This will be an online 20 question multiple choice test based on the Drone Code.
  2. Register for an operator ID if you’re responsible for a drone or model aircraft - If you own a drone, you are an Operator.
  3. Label any drones and model aircraft you’re responsible for with your operator ID - You have to make your own label, which clearly shows you ID - be creative if you like!

Below is a breakdown of the two types of registration. Which are you?:

Flyer ID

Anyone who wants to fly must pass an online theory test on flying safely and legally.
Minimum age: None, but children under 13 can only register with a parent or guardian present
Registration period: 3 years
Fee: Free

Operator ID

Anyone responsible for a drone or model aircraft must register as an operator.
When you register, you’ll get an operator ID with your certificate of registration. You must display your operator ID on your drones and model aircraft. You can use the same operator ID for all your drones and model aircraft.
Minimum age: 18
Registration period: 1 year
Fee: £9

Well then, are you a UK FLYER or an OPERATOR? Make sure you register yourself or your drone next month or you may get caught out during some leisure flight in the near future. I expect that when this comes into force the Police will make a show of checking drone flyers, especially if they have been called in by other people, in instances such as nuisance calls. For the CAA, I am impressed with the low cost and I hope that this will encourage more to fly within the law. Happy Droning.

Thanks for sharing - I agree that £9 is pretty low cost, considering the mayhem at Gatwick this year, the regulation is understandable!
