Making Bee Hotels Out Of McDonald's Billboards

In Sweden, McDonald's billboards are being turned into bee hotels, by outfitting regular billboards with holes that can be used as a safe space for bees and other insects to rest.

Permanent wood installations have drilled holes in them that helps to create a space available for bees and other insects.

Nord DBB is the agency behind the bee hotels, helping to turn those billboards into permanent bee hotel installations.

Considering that there are thousands of McDonald's billboards to potentially target, this program has a lot of room to grow and could easily become implemented in other areas.

McDonald's has admitted that scientists currently believe at least 30 percent of Sweden's bees are threatened and one of the big issues is that bees lack a suitable place to rest, a problem which they are hoping to address with the revision of those billboards.

“The survival of bees is an important issue for society as a whole. That we can use our signs for a good cause feels great,.... we are proud and excited to welcome our flying guests soon as they move into our bee hotels” -- Henrik Nerell, environmental manager at McDonald’s in Sweden.

They are hoping to scale up the initiative by spring next year.

The McHive

The world's smallest McDonald's, for bees, was also previously unveiled not long ago in Sweden as well. It's a fully functioning beehive.

Several restaurants around Sweden already have beehives on the roof of their venues as well.

From replacing grass around restaurants with flowers and plants for bees, and transforming their billboards into bee hotels etc, McDonald's in Sweden is doing all that they can to try and utilize their resources to address a problem with the bee population, to help promote the wellness of wild bees.

I heard there were many bee colonies in the roof of the Notre Dame de Paris and they managed to save them from the fire somehow. We had wasps in our roof when we moved in and have since evicted them 😆
