A Study Investigating Privacy Hypocrisy And Fears

It's no surprise that there would be people who might value their own privacy a great deal, but at times act in a hypocritical fashion by violating or supporting the violation of privacy for others.

One recent study sought to explore this reality by using an online survey to investigate the prevalence of in-person spying or "hacking" as the report referred to, that researchers say is driven by our natural curiosity.

The report discovered that many people had admitted to looking at the personal information of other people around them, even though they held their own privacy to a higher standard.

Looking at that personal information included actions like peeking at documents found in printer trays or glancing over to look at someone's computer screen.

The online survey behind the report was a part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and had been commissioned by HP, they're hoping it might help lead to more authentic conversation regarding this topic of privacy.

Many people reported losing control of their privacy as a top fear for them, some people are even losing sleep over it because they are so worried.

A great deal of respondents also feel that it's rather impossible to protect private data, according to the study results.

Might this in-person hacking truly be a greater threat than the many other fraudulent actors you can find online who are seeking to unjustly find and use people's information etc in undesirable ways? HP thinks it might and that's part of the reasoning behind starting the investigation.

Through their study they wanted to analyze how human behavior impacts our decisions, both in business and our personal lives, specifically when it comes to privacy.

Is it any surprise that people might value their own privacy but act in a manner that disregards that respect for the privacy of others?

We have seen throughout time that individuals are perpetually willing to support their own freedom, while being quite eager to use the state as a tool to erode the liberty of others and privacy is no different.

It's sad but true. People sometimes just can't see themselves from the outside.
