Rock Shoppin

Today was a good day. I went out to go buy some gems and minerals(rocks) in two different locations about 120 miles apart. The first was a garage sale by a well known gem and mineral dealer, John Garsow. John has it all and sometimes you can catch him when he's wanting to make a deal and clear inventory. That's what today was.

As soon as I arrived he was putting boxes of minerals in front of me, in addition to what he already had laid out, offering me deals. Some I couldn't pass up, like this monster opalized petrified wood.

It's a beastly 7.5lbs and I paid next to nothing for it.

Then there was this rhodochrosite crystal for next to nothing.

John deals in much higher end crystals so I imagine this was just stuff he had lying around in his garage that he needed to get rid of.

He sold me a tub of amazonites from Colorado I couldn't resist as well as some amazing wulfenites.

FYI - those amazonites are what is found in pegmatites I hunt.

After finishing up at John's I headed out to Barstow, Ca. for their annual gem and mineral show. It was a very foggy morning.

While there weren't a ton of dealers, there were quality specimens to be found for dirt cheap there too.

This tiffany stone specimen was incredible. I've never seen one like it.

I ended up picking up a bunch of fluorite, red beryl and Blue Forest Petrified Wood.

Most of this will be going to Japan, but I am putting a few pieces up in my etsy shop before I go home. You can find them here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/Rt395Minerals

It was a good day, but there is a 3rd show tomorrow that I am thinking about going to so, maybe I'll have some more goodies to show tomorrow!

I checked out your etsy store out of interest, i finally get the name @rt395 :)

One question out of curiosity. The prices are all very precise on etsy. Are they valued by weight?

Yes, Route(Rt)395 is a highway here in California with many gem localities along it as well as it being a beautiful drive.

The mineral specimens I try to keep 6oz or under because I ship for free and shipping in the US has skyrocketed in the past few years. A lot of what I sell are rarer specimens, not the common quartz crystals. Stuff serious collectors or dealers buy. Pricing is determined by rarity, locality, and appearance. Of course it's all subjective.
