Researchers at the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona (Spain) discovered a new technology that allows us to examine genetics millions of years ago.

"It is as if we had built a Hubble Space Telescope to study the evolution of life through genome sequences," said the creators.

Currently, multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is used to understand the family tree of species evolution. The larger your MSA, the larger the tree will be and the deeper we can dig in the past.

This new technology allows us to dig ten times more deeply and will help us scrutinize hundreds of millions of years ago, which will allow us to better understand evolution.

With technical evidence, researchers will be able to understand how some plant species evolved, to be more resistant to climate crisis or in which way genetic mutations of a species make them vulnerable to extinction.
