My tomato plant is air rooting

avatar

While picking a little bit ago I lifted branches laden with green tomatoes to find this crazy sight. The plant is air rooting over a 6 INCH LONG section of branch! The branch is over 6 inches above the ground so the roots would have to go a long ass ways thru the air to hit the soil.

I have seen small section of plants, normally a node joint or very nearby that throws some roots out into the air, but THIS is something else. I have a mass of plants that volunteered in the yard and they have all laid down as they have grown so I am expecting similar growth with them. Only the volunteers will actually have rooted since they have no plastic mulch keeping them from the soil.

Be an interesting experiment to hack that section out and start growing it alone and see what would come of it.

Didn’t even know that was possible! Roots from a branch?

Tomatoes are one of the easiest plants to root from cuttings. You can hack off a small section of a branch with leaf, stick it partly in water and it will readily throw roots. I have never seen one so agressive at rooting

Do you think something is lacking in the soil?
