Stumbled across this fantastic video of Mars... in 4K!
Do you like exploring alien landscapes in 4K? Do you like classical music and factoids about Mars rovers? Well then, this is for you.
It's better on a big screen. :)
This was made by taking these massive panoramas shot by NASA rovers and then doing a good ol' fashioned pan and scan effect. Instead of classical music, it would have been cool to hear some interesting sound designs.
Also, I believe all of NASA's archives are free to the public, so they're a good resource for 3D textures and scientific information to help inform any scene involving space. Just recently a friend of mine told me that my moon for @thetearsees was far too close to Earth. He was right.
Everywhere you look when you search for Earth and moon something like the above image will appear. In reality, the moon is significantly further away.
Something like this:
Another way to frame it is if you had a basketball and a tennis ball, place the tennis ball 25 feet from the basketball and that's about how far the moon would be at scale.
This changes everything. I'm going to go back to my planetary animation with The Tear and adjust it so that the moon and Earth are much further apart. In the end, this note from my friend is going to make the shot better. I can now better utilize the Earth and moon for foreground action for better parallax.
CHECK OUT THE TEAR!
The Tear is my cosmic horror short film and cinematic universe.
WHO DIS IS
If you want to know who I am and what Distant Signal is, check this out. It's sort of a manifesto. The TL;DR is that I've won an award for producing, make a lot of reality TV, live in LA and think that artist and media incentives are misaligned and serve large corporations and not independent artists.
