Truth be told my husband and I are always looking for ways to stay away from the doctor’s office. We believe in using natural preventative methods and finding natural solutions to ailments that already exist. Home treatments are safer, more affordable and you have more control over what goes in and on your body.

Several years back I decided to spend more time taking care of myself cosmetically at home. During my research on what tools I could use, I came across skin care and high frequency. I remember thinking

high frequency and skin care doesn’t sound like they go together.

My inquiring mind wanted to know so I set off to find out how high frequency treatments could improve my skin and aid in hair growth and retention.

I have learned the best way to understand a new concept is to start from whence it came. Let’s stroll into...

You might be familiar with the name Tesla in association with the electric car. But did you know that Nikola Tesla was responsible for many inventions and enhancements that shaped the 20th century advancements we have today? To name a few, this inventor, scientist, and engineer harnessed the power of alternating current, developed induction motors, experimented with wireless power and invented the first remote control boat. However, we will only be focusing on his medical contributions.

One of his greatest discoveries was the use of transformers and induction coils for obtaining high pressures. He improved the ones that were already in existence because they were inadequate. This reinvented transformer is known as the Tesla coil for producing high frequency and high voltage currents (Tesla currents). These currents are used in diathermy. Diathermy is a therapeutic treatment most commonly prescribed for muscle and joint conditions. It uses a high-frequency electric current to stimulate heat generation within body tissues. The heat can help with various processes, including: increasing blood flow, to stimulate circulation, relieve pain, destroy unhealthy tissue, or cause bleeding vessels to clot.

In 1891, Tesla passed currents through his own body and was the first to experience the beneficial effects of electrotherapy. In 1896, he used high frequency currents and designed an ozone generator for producing ozone, with powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties. He used this to treat infections which became a popular solution before the birth of antibiotics.

The use of these Tesla currents for certain electro-therapeutics we use today have been highly successful.

The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way. He lives and labors and hopes.

High Frequency Machines and How They Work

3D90517A-22D3-4203-9697-F1C8E0E5E39A.jpeg

From professional spa and salon grades to portable home kits, high frequency machines are highly in demand. High-frequency treatment uses low-current high-frequency alternating currents, delivered via a clear tempered glass electrode. Some of the oxygen in the air is converted into ozone via the high frequency currents. This is what makes the treatment germicidal (disinfectant), drying and warming.

At up to 250,000 Hz frequency, the hollow glass electrode behaves like a glow discharge tube, and is sometime called a "violet ray" or "violet wand. The gas is vacuumed sealed into the electrode. When you put the electrode into the actual current the gas ignites. There are two types of gas you can find in these electrodes. There is argon gas that glows a violet/blue hue and neon gas that glows a neon red/orange. The Argon gas produces the sensation of heat while it stimulates blood circulation, helps oxygenate the skin, and helps heal any open lesion. Neon gas will help with sensitive and/or aging skin. This is something to keep in mind when determining which one suites best your needs.

How It Feels

When the electrodes touch the skin they produce a subtle glow as well as skin purifying, enriched oxygen molecules. You will hear and feel a therapeutic zapping or tingling sensation which you can adjust according to your personal comfort level via the power level control dials one the machine.

Electrode Uses

  • mushroom: forehead, cheeks, neck, chest and back
  • rod: eye area, inflammation spots and sterilization of pimples
  • neck/leg: used on neck, shoulder, arm, back and legs and for removal of cellulites
  • spoon: for targeted sensitive areas ie. dark circles/bags beneath eyes, wrinkle reduction and skin stimulation
  • comb: scalp treatment for hair growth and retention

Why High Frequency?

A Closer Look at the Benefits

8054ACBD-168D-4B3B-90B5-41D8D3BC17E1.jpeg

There are many benefits to using high frequency treatments that your skin and body will thank you for. From your scalp down to your legs high frequency can be used as a whole body treatment alternative to other painful and expensive procedures.

During a high frequency treatment, enriched oxygen molecules are produced that create an anti-bacterial action and a natural thermal tissue warming by naturally contracting underlying blood vessels and tiny muscle groups. This reaction helps your blood vessels push away toxins, while the cells in your skin are enriched with nutrients and hydrating volume. This in turn creates an increase in blood circulation and cell renewal that supports increased levels of collagen and elastin. The skin is left feeling instantly energized and noticeably softer after just one treatment.

Here is a following list of benefits high frequency offers:

Treatment for - acne, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, puffy eyes, dark under eye circles, cellulite, blemishes, pimples and cold sores, scalp conditions, dandruff, thinning hair, alopecia

Offers - ozone therapy, oxygenated tissue, detoxified and glowing skin, normalized sebum production, skin tightening and smoothing, enhanced blood circulation, skin moisture balance, exfoliation, enhanced skin care product penetration, hair retention, revitalized hair, enhanced hair follicles

Facial Gauze

Wearing a facial gauze during a high frequency treatment will allow for deeper penetration of the electrical currents. The more oxygen you allow around the electrode the more effective it is. The farther you lift the electrode away from the skin, the more oxygen surrounds which results in more ozone. Putting a gauze over your face or the area in which you’re using high frequency, allows the gap that makes it more beneficial.

Wearing a gauze also helps the electrodes glide easier and smoother over your face or targeted area. If you are applying products on your skin before treatment it will really help for easier movement of the electrode.

Note: This causes a powerful effect. To protect your skin tissue create a gap no more than 1/4”.

My Personal Experience with High Frequency

I have been using the kit shown above for several years now. There were two main reasons I chose to use high frequency. In my twenties I would always get these reoccurring painful ugly cold sores above and below my lips. They were huge and monstrous and I didn’t want to be seen when they appeared. My mother suffered from same problem as well.

I started out using the rod electrode directly on the cold sore. I would sometimes lift it in order to allow more oxygen to surround it. After the first treatment (5 minutes) I noticed within a few hours it already started to dry out. After three treatments it was dried out completely nearly ready to fall off. I was so amazed at how fast it worked.

As I was doing these direct treatments I started realizing the cold sores were appearing less often. Eventually they stopped coming and I can attest today that I have not had one ever since. Ever so often I would glide the spoon electrode over the area I used to get the cold sores just to be sure they stayed away. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve done that and they still have not returned.

The second reason I purchased my kit was to help encourage healthy hair growth. I have plenty of thick hair and have no troubles with thinning but wanted to see how long I could grow my hair. I knew that high frequency could possible speed up this process by stimulating my scalp.

I never tracked any of my hair growth so I can’t honesty say that it helped to grow my hair. What I can say is how the treatment left my scalp feeling. It was almost as if someone took my old scalp and replaced it with a fresh rejuvenated one. It is so relaxing and feels amazing as it glides through your hair. It literally is like an electric scalp massage.

I still use the kit on my scalp to help retain my healthy hair. I know that as I age it won’t always be as healthy so this natural preventative method is the way to go. I also treat my husband’s thinning hair, I am NOT ready for him to go bald on me lol!

Precautions ⚠️

When you purchase a high frequency device you will receive a number of warnings and precautions with it. Most are basic and common sense like do not use this device around water. However, there are some I would like to emphasize to you now so you can determine if high frequency is suitable for you...

You will smell ozone while using this device.
When using high frequency remove all jewelry and metal.
Before turning device on make sure the electrode is in contact with your skin to avoid a slight shock. Although it isn’t painful it could startle you. Place your index finger on the electrode, turn the dial to desired level and then place electrode on target area before removing your finger.
Use device for only 5-10 minutes per treatment, per day.
Do not use high frequency if you:
~ are pregnant
~ have heart disease
~ have a pacemaker
~ have metallic implants
~ are suffering from high blood pressure
~ have epilepsy
~ suffer with rosacea
~ have spider veins or broken capillaries

Interesting, but I wouldn’t use this kit because I have high blood pressure and I am afraid of electric currents. I would love to find a natural treatment for my dry scalp and skin in general. I noticed that as I get older, my skin gets drier. I can keep my skin moisturized with creams and lotions, but scalp is difficult. Maybe you can suggest something? 😊

Have you tried jojoba oil? It’s the oil that is closes to our natural hair sebum. It not only moisturizes but it’s hydrating and balancing, antimicrobial, repairs damaged hair, has vitamins that encourage hair growth and is used to control scalp acne and dandruff. I use this on all of my family’s hair and we love it! You can use it for your whole body as well.

The other I will suggest are essential oils. Their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and moisturizing properties are great for dry skin. I would suggest looking into these essential oils: lavender, tea tree, cedarwood, rosemary and peppermint ;)

You can dilute them with another oil and put them all over your skin and massage into your scalp.

Just be cautious to wash your hands thoroughly after using essential oils before touching your face and around your eyes. If you ever get them in your eyes wash it out with coconut oil.
