The Ignorant and the Inebriated: Another Day at the Library

More and more people are coming the library to handle government paperwork, and that means more and more people are completely out of their depth technologically.

If you need a public computer, please understand:

  • you need to know your passwords.
  • companies may not recognize our IP address, and request verification through e-mail or your phone.
  • yes, you need to have those devices or e-mail passwords. We can't override it.
  • if computers "aren't your thing," remember, we aren't your secretaries. Come in when it is not urgent to find out how things work.

We had one computer user who needed that advice in advance, but never got it.

We also had another couple come in acting strange. I didn't catch a whiff of the Devil's Lettuce about them, but they acted high. There were mistake-laden login efforts before they were able to access our computers, but once on, they at least seemed competent to browse the web and print the documents they needed.

They were chauffeured by someone else, so I don't really care what they were on as long as they weren't driving. Still, at least if it was pot, they'd have been fairly safe. As the old joke goes, drunks run stop signs, but potheads stop and wait for them to turn green.
