Rise in Cyber Risk Has Roughly 9 in 10 Americans Worried

A recent survey found that about 9 in 10 Americans are worried about a data breach. With the rise in cyber risk today, with all of the stories that have been reported over security breaches, it is understandable that people might be concerned.

Even multi-million dollar companies have a difficult time making things secure, it's an important consideration not just for companies but for all individuals. And the frequency of those attacks is going to erode trust and confidence.

Businesses are suffering more attacks with remote working and many people around the world and not just in the U.S. continue to be concerned about security risks while working remotely, as well as their own while engaging in personal activities.

This has prompted some companies to take to training their employees about how to spot potential phishing e-mails and take other precautions when doing work at home to avoid potential risk.

Hundreds if not thousands of companies have been targeted just this year and with those stories continuing it has more people learning about that risk and being concerned about what risks they too might face online.

This has been demonstrated with the recent survey that indicates about 9 in 10 Americans are concerned about it, despite some small businesses indicating it might not be on their top list of priorities to worry about.

In some areas though there are small businesses saying that cybersecurity issues are on the rise.

Today because of these growing issues there is a high demand for cybersecurity chiefs and those who can help to make individuals and companies feel a little more safe.

And as far as who can bring a solution to the problem, it isn't surprising to find that not many are waiting on government. They don't believe they will be able to effectively protect them.

Another survey found that about 53% of respondents didn't have confidence that the U.S. government would be able to solve the issue or protect them as far as cyber security risks. Still, many want the government and organizations to do more today to provide some sense of security.

It’s definitely not a bad thing to at least take some cyber security courses to not only provide a possible career path, but to better be able to protect yourself.

Something free and simple to get started is codeacademy.com. They have pro classes as well but they have an intro to cyber security. I took classes in school, but I am doing their courses as refreshers. Always start with the free stuff, lol.

Okay! I've got a coursera through school as well so I will check out both codeacademy and coursera. Maybe codeacadamey has something like coursera offered this past year where you get a free full-credit course on their site once if you're a registered college or community college student. Thanks :)

Credit card companies and ACH use a pull technology for collecting payments. If there is a breech in any company with this data, then people's finances are at risk. Cybercurrency doesn't completely remove risk, but moving from credit cards would be a big deal.

  1. Don't have social media, period.
  2. Don't post things identifying yourself anywhere on the internet, period.
  3. Don't blindly trust anyone, period.
  4. Be humble and quiet outside of the internet so to not let prying, dishonest people affect you digitally.
  5. 2-factor on everything.
  6. Go from GMail/Apple/Yahoo/comcast to protonmail
  7. Use a reputable, thoroughly-tested VPN when you're doing finances online or anything remotely that is sensitive
  8. Don't watch porn. Seriously. There's a reason why there are so many trackers on porn sites. Go years without watching porn and see what changes for you personally but also how much less you're finding entities intruding into your life.
  9. Do not make enemies, online or elsewhere. People will come after you if you give them a reason.
  10. Do not shop online.
