Hiring Spree Largely Driven By Bars, Restaurants and Hotels

Now that things are reopening and people are able to go out again to restaurants and bars things are picking up and getting busy for those businesses.

Restaurants and hotels are looking to hire thousands of new employees around the country and they are having a hard time doing it.

Leisure and hospitality is leading in terms of job growth right now and restaurants and bars are not far behind, same with hotels.

Hiring workers in these positions has been a challenge for many businesses but some say that the wages aren't the barrier.

Ask the ones applying for the position though and you might get a different story.

Some have suggested that there is no labor shortage but only a lack of good jobs that people are willing to apply for and work for. Now, fast food places are offering signing bonuses and increases wages to try and attract people to sign up and get interested in taking the position.

Robots are already delivering goods in Texas, California, Florida, and other regions.

This might mean we will start seeing more of those self-checkouts and robots serving food and coming in to more restaurants and hotels a lot sooner than expected if they cannot fill the positions. Businesses might scramble to find any alternative available in the market like some are already doing.

I drive for DoorDash. On a recent trip into Taco Bell to pick up a customer order, I noticed that they had hiring signs all over the restaurant. An entire table was filled with job information. I picked up one of the flyers. They were offering a $14/hour starting wage, plus medical benefits, a $1000 hiring bonus, college tuition reimbursement, and--get this--MONTHLY ATTENDANCE BONUSES! Something like if you had perfect attendance you'd get an extra $100 per week. They literally only had three guys working, and the drive-thru was slammed.

It's not surprising, those were the industries who were hit the hardest during the pandemic lockdowns. My sister recently got her job back working for a hotel as a manager.
