I dust off an old image made by me in the "distant" 2018 to celebrate the beginning of the James Webb Telescope era.
The new space eye that will scan the universe as far as no man has ever looked, will depart today on board an Ariane 5 rocket from the spaceport of Kourou French Guiana. The launch is scheduled for 12 noon (CET) today 25 December and can be followed live on the ESA website https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/ESA_Web_TV
The James Webb Telescope's mission will be to extend the already incredible work done by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Its larger dimensions are combined with cutting-edge technology, it will allow us to have a more precise knowledge of the Universe, which we are as far as we know now, the only ones who are aware of its existence.
And who knows if it is not the James Webb Telescope that gives us the certainty once and for all that we are not alone in the Universe.
The fact that I drew the cartoon 3 years ago speaks volumes about how complex and full of obstacles was the realization and preparation for the launch of this mission.
Just the fact of having to fold it to make it fit into the rocket and then open it once it reaches its destination 1.5 million kilometers from Earth makes it clear what levels of aerospace engineering we are talking about.

Rispolvero una vecchia vignetta che ho realizzato addirittura nel "lontano" 2018 per celebrare l'inizio dell'era James Webb Telescope.
Il nuovo occhio spaziale che scruterà l'universo fin laddove nessun uomo ha guardato mai, partirà oggi a bordo di un razzo Ariane 5 dallo spazioporto di Kourou Guyana Francese. Il lancio è previsto per le ore 12 (CET) di oggi 25 dicembre e può essere seguito in diretta sul sito dell'ESA https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/ESA_Web_TV
La missione del James Webb Telescope sarà quella di ampliare il già incredibile lavoro svolto da Hubble Space Telescope.
Le sue maggiori dimensioni unite ad una tecnologia d'avanguardia, ci consentirà di avere una conoscenza più precisa dell'Universo, di cui siamo per quanto ne sappiamo ora, gli unici ad essere consapevoli della sua esistenza.
E chissà che non sia proprio il James Webb Telescope a darci la certezza una volta per tutte che non siamo soli nell'Universo.
Il fatto che io abbia disegnato la vignetta 3 anni fa, la dice lunga su quanto sia stata complessa e ricca di ostacoli la realizzazione e preparazione al lancio di questa missione.
Solo il fatto di doverlo piegare per farlo entrare nel razzo per poi aprirlo una volta giunto a destinazione a 1,5 milioni di chilometri dalla Terra fa capire di quali livelli di ingegneria aerospaziale stiamo parlando.
