Redesigned wood pile

Between yesterday and today I have re-engineered my wood pile. The new form is solid, level, off the ground, and nicely lined up. The giant pile of 12 foot long pallets have come in very handy as 2 of them end to end gives me 3+ cords worth of space. The prior pile was a 8ft x 12ft space that only allowed for about 2 cords easily.

You can see how shitty the old pile had become. The posts "holding" the pile up were barely in the gravel, I pulled them out by hand. The pile had leaned onto the fence and was overhung by a bunch of lilacs.

Yesterday I unpiled the old pile into a pile so I could clean beneath it. I got the pile moved before I gave up for the evening. This morning I went out and ripped out the invading lilacs, l leveled the gravel, and trimmed back branches.

Under the old pile was a bunch of nice thick weed fabric, like I used under our deck, so I laid that down end to end and then set the pallets atop it. The weed fabric will help keep the lilacs, chokecherry, grass, and catnip from taking over the wood pile.

The house end got a pallet with a couple fence posts holding one side and the column of the carport the other. I then re-repiled the old pile that I had repiled, into the new pile. So now I have the most cured and dry wood closest to the house and the newly split wood in the yard will get added to the right.

The next project is moving the pile of bricks next to the fire pit, stacking the smaller diameter branches for use in the fire pit, and then hauling wood in to stack.

Not bad for the first half of the day.

Man, you've been busy! My back aches just looking at the pile...
Stacking firewood on pallets really seems to work well for keeping the bottom of the stack dry. Those 12 foot pallets look like they're really useful, but I'm guessing that they're a pain in the back to move around.

The design is SOOOO much better now. The pallets are not light by any means and they are super unweildy. I have the pile of pallets on the other side of the garden so it required carrying each on my back for a ways then sliding it on its edge the rest of the way. Luckily I only had to move the 2 pallets, for now. If my wood supply outgrows my space I may have to put another out in the yard somewhere to stack on.
